Assistant coach Rick LePire enters his first season as a volunteer assistant coach on the CSUSM baseball staff in 2014-15.
With more than 25 years of experience, LePire has spent the last 18 seasons as the head baseball coach at Vista High School. He guided the team to 365 wins, averaging more than 20 wins per season and making playoff 17 out of 18 seasons. LePire was the 2012 California Large School Coach of the Year and SDCIFS Coach of the Year. The team was also ranked No. 1 ranked team in California and No. 8 ranked USA team that season. Ten of his players at Vista HS were drafted with six making it to AAA and two making it to the majors (Trevor Cahill & Wes Littleton). More than 50 of his players went on to play in college. LePire was selected to coach the Southern team in the California State All-Star Series in 2001-03.
Beginning in 1995, LePire did a two-year stint as the pitching coach at Palomar College.
LePire played two seasons for Santa Ana College where he was an all-conference selection. He transferred to San Diego State in 1982, but his collegiate campaign was cut short due to a career-ending injury. LePire received his bachelor’s in public administration from SDSU in 1986.
A graduate from La Quinta High School in Westminster, Calif., LePire was a three-year varsity letterman under Baseball Coaches of America Hall of Fame coach Dave Demarest.
LePire received his California clear teaching credential in social studies from National University in 1991 and his master’s in physical education from Azusa Pacific University in 2001.
