CSUSM Scores Three Unanswered Goals to Knock Off Stanislaus

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Three unanswered goals by the Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team (6-2-1, 3-1-0 CCAA) led it to a 3-1 victory over Stanislaus State (2-4-4, 0-2-2 CCAA) on Sunday at The Cage.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a CSUSM goal kick, CSUSM tried to head a Stanislaus pass away at midfield, but the deflection was misdirected and allowed the Warriors' Emmanuel Duran to break away with the ball, evade the Cougar keeper and put a rolling shot into the center of the goal and give Stanislaus a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute.
  • On a Cougar free kick from just outside the top of the box, Cisco Avila threaded the needle and got a shot past a Warrior wall and into the right side of the goal to knot the game at 1-1 in the 18th minute.
  • With just 10 seconds remaining in the first half, a CSUSM throw-in went off a Stanislaus defender's head and landed at the feet of Jacob Arellano just outside the top of the box. Arellano then put a shot into the top left corner of the goal to give the Cougars a 2-1 lead in the 45th minute.
  • CSUSM went up 3-1 in the 67th minute. A long throw-in from the left sideline by Kyle Sherman went off the head of Andrew Valencia and into the left side of the goal from the middle of the six-yard box.
 
QUICK KICKS
  • CSUSM dominated the stats, leading 11-8 in shots, 5-2 in shots on goal, 4-2 on corner kicks and 64%-36% for possession.
  • Avila notched his team-leading sixth goal of the season, tying him for third in the conference. He now has 11 for his career at CSUSM, taking 10th on the program's top-10 list.
  • Arellano and Valencia each posted their third goal of the year.
  • Sherman's assist was his first of the season.
  • All 10 CSUSM assists this season have come from 10 different Cougars.
  • The Cougars broke up a streak of three consecutive Warrior wins in the all-time series, their first over Stanislaus since 2023 in Turlock.
  • CSUSM improves to 6-4-2 in the all-time series against Stanislaus and 4-1-1 when playing at home.
  • With another three points, CSUSM sits in a tie for second in the CCAA standings with CSUSB at nine points.
