Cougars Fall to Oaks, 5-3

ATHERTON, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team (6-3-1, 3-2-0 CCAA) was on the wrong end of a goal-scoring bonanza as it fell 5-3 to Menlo (4-3-2, 2-1-1 CCAA) on Thursday at Wunderlich Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A turnover at the edge of the box was picked up by Blake Haseyama, who made a pass to Cisco Avila at the penalty kick marker. Avila then put a shot into the left side of the goal to give CSUSM a 1-0 lead in the 7th minute.
  • Just a few moments later in the 13th minute, CSUSM went up 2-0 on a goal from Matthew Ibarra, who played the ball off a Menlo dribble and put a shot to the right post from the left side of the box.
  • The Oaks narrowed the Cougar lead to 2-1 in the 17th minute. Tim Schwarz dribbled into the left side of the box before passing to Manuel Portillo in the middle of the box, who put a sliding shot into the goal from six yards out.
  • Menlo tied the game at 2-2 in the 22nd minute. As Roy Rosenberg dribbled past a CSUSM defender in the left side of the box, before putting a pass into the middle to Schwarz, who headed the ball into the right corner of the goal.
  • Less than a minute later, the Oaks struck again. A cross into the right box from the left side by Portillo was crossed to Marcos Garcia, who immediately put a cross to the left post to Hugo Few, who put a sliding shot into the net and give Menlo a 4-3 lead in the 23rd minute.
  • Menlo scored its fourth unanswered goal in the 32nd minute to take a 4-2 lead. A header by Tim Schwarz went off the CSUSM keeper before Sam Archer got the rebound and put a shot into the right side of the goal.
  • Just four second before halftime, the Oaks were called for a foul in the box, setting up a Cougar penalty kick by Andrew Valencia, who put a shot into the left corner of the goal and cutting the deficit to 4-3 in the 45th minute.
  • From just in front of the team benches at midfield, Schwarz made a pass to the center of the field to Portillo, who dribbled to the top of the box before sending a shot over the keeper and into the goal to give the Oaks a 5-3 lead in the 83rd minute.
 
QUICK KICKS
  • Menlo had the edge in shots (21-14), shots on goal (10-4) and corner kicks (11-3) while CSUSM had the advantage for possession (53%-47%).
  • Avila's goal was his team-leading seventh of the season.
  • Ibarra and Valencia each tallied their fourth goals of the year.
  • Haseyama notched his team-leading second assist.
  • This was CSUSM's first meeting with Menlo since 2014, and it was the Oaks' first win in the all-time series.
  • The last time CSUSM encountered a match with a total of eight goals being scored was its 5-3 victory against Cal State East Bay last season.
