CCAA Regular-Season Champion CSUSM Finishes Conference Play with Series Sweep at CSUSB

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – The CCAA Regular-Season Championship Cal State San Marcos softball team (47-6, 28-4 CCAA) clinched its sixth CCAA series sweep of the season—a program record—by defeating Cal State San Bernardino (21-29, 10-20 CCAA) 11-3 in game one and 10-0 in six innings in game two during Saturday's doubleheader at CSUSB Softball Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Cal State San Marcos wasted no time, jumping out to a 4–0 lead in the top of the first. Marissa Morales worked a walk, and Jillian Albayati doubled to put runners in scoring position. Zoe Karam drove in the first run with a single, and after a fielder's choice, Czar Fleischman delivered an RBI double to push the lead to 2–0. Madilyn Novello and Olivia Rivera followed with RBI singles to cap the four-run inning.
  • Cal State San Bernardino responded in the bottom of the first. Sarah Moite and Iris Bejarano drew consecutive walks before Isabella Venegas doubled home Moite. RBI singles by Mia Escujuri and Annamaria Nuno trimmed the lead to 4–3.
  • The Cougars answered immediately in the second. After Morales walked and Albayati doubled again, Rae D'Amato lifted a sacrifice fly to score a run. Fleischman followed with a two-run home run to center field, extending the lead to 7–3.
  • CSUSM kept adding on, scoring three runs in the fourth on doubles by D'Amato and Fleischman and an RBI groundout from Malaia Huskey. The Cougars tacked on their final run in the sixth when successive singles and aggressive base running again plated Fleischman. Jordan Hill settled in after the first inning and retired nine of the final 11 batters to close out the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Cal State San Marcos set the tone immediately with a five-run first inning. Jillian Albayati and Zoe Karam opened the frame with singles before Rae D'Amato reached safely to load the bases. Czar Fleischman drove in two with a single up the middle, and Alizabeth Ruiz followed with a two-run double that rolled to the wall. Angelina Rodriguez capped the inning with an RBI single to center.
  • The Cougars added a run in the fourth when Albayati doubled down the left-field line and scored on Karam's RBI single to right-center. Ruiz blasted a solo home run in the fifth to extend the lead to 7–0.
  • CSUSM put the game away in the sixth. After Albayati doubled again and a walk loaded the bases, Fleischman tripled, clearing the bases as all three runs scored, two coming on a throwing error.

QUICK HITS
  • Cougar starter Hailey Shiftlett (6-1) recorded the complete-game shutout, scattering four hits with one strikeout.
  • CSUSB starter Tara Skinner (3-5) took the loss after allowing five runs in the first inning.
  • This was CSUSM's 12th shutout of the 2026 season, tying an NCAA Division II era record set in 2022.
  • CSUSM outscored CSUSB 45–14 overall in the series.

UP NEXT
CSUSM will head to the CCAA Tournament hosted by Cal State East Bay next week. The Cougars earned the No. 1 seed and will play Thursday, May 7, at noon against the winner of Wednesday's 2 p.m. matchup between No. 4 seed Cal State Dominguez Hills and No. 5 seed Cal State Monterey Bay.
