HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a scoreless first inning, Cal State San Marcos broke through in the bottom of the second. Czar Fleischman opened the frame by launching a solo home run to right-center field, giving the Cougars an early 1-0 lead. Madilyn Novello followed with a single to center, advanced into scoring position on a groundout, and eventually scored when Jordan Elias ripped an RBI single through the right side to make it 2-0.
- Cal State Dominguez Hills threatened in the early innings, including a second-inning double by Savanna Kastigar and multiple singles from Gaby Gandara, but Cougar pitcher Jordan Hill worked out of trouble each time, inducing flyouts and weak contact to keep the Toros off the scoreboard.
- The Cougars extended the lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth. Fleischman singled and advanced to third on a fielding error. Lauren DePlitch laid down a sacrifice bunt to move runners into scoring position before Olivia Rivera lifted a sacrifice fly to right field, allowing Fleischman to score an unearned run.
- Cal State San Marcos put the game away in the fifth inning. Marissa Morales led off with a single, setting the stage for Jillian Albayati, who crushed a two-run home run to right field to push the Cougar lead to 5-0.
- From there, Jordan Hill continued to cruise in the circle, retiring the Toros in order in the sixth and seventh innings to complete the shutout and seal the opening-round victory.
