No. 3 CSUSM Splits Non-Conference Twinbill at No. 25 CUI

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The No. 3 Cal State San Marcos softball team (43-6) closed out non-conference play on Tuesday with a split against No. 25 Concordia University Irvine at Golden Eagles Field, earning a 3-2 extra‑inning victory in game one before fell 4–3 in the nightcap.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The nightcap developed into a pitchers' duel with both teams held scoreless through five innings.
  • CSUSM broke through in the sixth when Jillian Albayati and Zoe Karam opened the inning with singles. Rae D'Amato followed with an RBI single down the right‑field line, and a fielding error allowed another run to score to give the Cougars a 2–0 lead.
  • Concordia Irvine answered in the bottom half with two runs on three hits and a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 2–2.
  • After a scoreless seventh, CSUSM pulled ahead in the eighth when Jillian Albayati launched a solo home run to left field.
  • Hailey Shiftlett retired the Golden Eagles in order in the bottom of the inning, inducing a game‑ending double play to secure the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • CSUSM opened the scoring in the third inning when Kaila Siu drew a leadoff walk and later scored on an RBI double to left‑center by Marissa Morales to give the Cougars a 1–0 lead.
  • Concordia Irvine answered in the bottom of the inning with back‑to‑back solo home runs to take a 2–1 advantage.
  • The Cougars responded again in the fourth as Zoe Karam reached base and later scored on an RBI single by Czar Fleischman to even the game at 2–2.
  • The Golden Eagles regained the lead in the fifth with two solo home runs to move ahead 4–2.
  • CSUSM pulled within one in the sixth when Zoe Karam singled and eventually scored on an RBI single by Kaila Siu, but the Cougars were unable to push across the tying run.
