SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The No. 3 Cal State San Marcos softball team (40-5, 22-4 CCAA) became the first team to clinch a berth in the upcoming CCAA Tournament with a doubleheader sweep of Cal Poly Humboldt (19-22, 10-10 CCAA) on Friday at CSUSM Softball Field, earning a 3-0 shutout in the opener before completing the sweep with a 7-1 victory in game two.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- CSUSM wasted little time getting on the board, capitalizing on a Humboldt error in the bottom of the first to scratch across an unearned run. The Cougars added to the lead in the second inning with back-to-back singles from Madilyn Novello and Alizabeth Ruiz. A two-out RBI single from Marissa Morales plated Novello, and Jillian Albayati followed with an RBI single to make it 3-0.
- That was all the support the Cougar pitching staff would need.
QUICK HITS
- Madison Cabrera (8-0) earned the win after throwing 5.2 shutout innings, allowing three hits with six strikeouts.
- Lily Fournier (9-11) took the loss for Cal Poly Humboldt after allowing three runs (two earned) on nine hits in six innings.
- Hailey Shiftlett (7) recorded the save, tossing 1.1 scoreless innings without allowing a hit.
- The shutout marked CSUSM's 10th shutout of the 2026 season.
- CSUSM finished with nine hits and did not commit an error.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Cougars jumped out early in the nightcap, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first. After a leadoff double by Zoe Karam and two walks loaded the bases, Madilyn Novello delivered a two-RBI single to give CSUSM the early advantage.
- Humboldt briefly responded with a solo homer by Katlyn Gifford in the top of the second, but CSUSM answered immediately. An RBI sacrifice fly from Jillian Albayati and an RBI double from Karam restored a three-run cushion.
- The Cougars continued to apply pressure in the third and fourth innings, adding runs on a sacrifice fly from Novello, an RBI single from Karam and an RBI knock from Rae D'Amato to build a commanding 7-1 lead.

- Daleah Cardenas (16-1) earned the win after allowing one run on four hits with three strikeouts in five innings of work.
- Mason Hatton (6-5) took the loss after surrendering seven runs on 11 hits in 3.1 innings.
- Hailey Shiftlett closed out the game with 1.2 scoreless relief innings, allowing no hits.
- CSUSM recorded 11 hits, including five for extra bases.
- With the punch of their ticket to the CCAA Tournament, the Cougars will make their fifth consecutive appearance.Â

CSUSM will close out its regular-season home slate on Saturday, April 18, against Cal Poly Humboldt, with a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. at CSUSM Softball Field. Prior to the game, there will be a short Senior Day ceremony, followed by a more elaborate one that will include the seniors' families after the doubleheader.
