CSUSM Sweeps Doubleheader with Biola to Earn Program-Best Start

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Off to its best start in program history, the Cal State San Marcos baseball team (6-0) took both ends of its doubleheader against Biola (3-3) by scores of 14-4 and 2-1 on Friday at Dennis A. Pugh Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars broke out for six runs in the bottom of the first to begin the scoring on RBI singles from Michael Ryan, Stephen Espinoza and Jacob Embleton, two bases-loaded hit-by-pitches by Max Shor and Chris Tampoya, and a bases-loaded walk by Mikey Gray.
  • CSUSM took a 9-0 lead in the bottom of the third with a two-out, three-run blast to right by Canon King.
  • Biola made it a 9-1 game in the top of the fourth with a sacrifice fly to right by Ty Cowley.
  • An RBI single to center by Shor put the Cougars up 10-1 in the bottom of the fourth.
  • CSUSM went up 12-1 in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run single up the middle by Ryan.
  • The Eagles clawed back a run in the top of the seventh as Luke Caruso reached on an RBI fielder's choice to short.
  • An RBI double by Jonny Tewinkle and an RBI single by Tommy Kendlinger cut Biola's deficit to 12-4 in the top of the eighth.
  • The Cougars made it a 10-run lead once again in the bottom of the eighth on a two-run blast to left by Collin Taylor to make it 14-4.

  • Cougar starter PJ Wendler (2-0) earned the win as he struck out four while allowing one unearned run on a hit, two walks and a hit-by-pitch in 6.0 innings.
  • Eagle starter Jack O'Brasky (0-1) lasted just a third of an inning as he allowed six earned runs on three hits, four hit-by-pitches and a walk.
  • The Cougars moved to 5-0 – their best start to a season in program history.
  • CSUSM scored 14 runs for the third time in five games.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars went up 1-0 in the bottom of the third. After Jake Larson singled through the right side and advanced Michael Weber to third, a bad throw back into the infield allowed Weber to score.
  • With an Eagle on third in the top of the fourth, a balk call scored the runner and tied the game at 1-1.
  • With runners on the corners and two outs in the bottom of the seventh, a wild pitch allowed Jacob Embleton to score the game-winning run and move the Cougars to 6-0 on the year.
 
QUICK HITS
  • Cougar reliever Zach Romero (1-0) picked up the win after allowing just one walk in 1.1 innings.
  • Eagle reliever Dylan Alanis (0-1) took the loss after giving up one earned run on two walks in two-thirds of an inning.
  • CSUSM had never started a season at 6-0 until today.
  • Embleton is the lone Cougar to reach base in all six games this season
