SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team (1-0) opened its 2026 campaign with a dominant 14-3 victory over Colorado School of Mines (0-1) on Friday afternoon at Dennis A. Pugh Field. The Cougars exploded for eight runs over the first two innings and never trailed in the wire-to-wire win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Cougars opened the scoring with three runs in the first inning, all coming on Michael Weber's bases-clearing double to left center.
- CSUSM blew the game open in the second with a five-run frame highlighted by a Jacob Embleton RBI double, a Rees Kent RBI single and a two-run home run from Zech Samayoa to make it 8-0.
- In the third, Leighton Helfrick added an RBI single through the right side, extending the lead to 9-0.
- Colorado School of Mines scratched across a run in the fourth on an RBI groundout, but CSUSM countered with two more, benefiting from an error and productive contact to make it 11-1.
- The Orediggers scored once in the fifth and again in the sixth, with the sixth-inning run coming on an RBI double from Jackson Babcock.
- CSUSM answered decisively in the seventh, scoring three runs behind a Helfrick RBI double, a wild pitch that brought Embleton home and a sacrifice fly by Jake Callahan, pushing the lead to 14-3.
- Mason Ali shut the door with three scoreless innings to earn a save and finish the season-opening victory.
