Big Second Half Falls Short at Pomona

POMOMA, Calif.  – The Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team (5-18, 5-12 CCAA) dropped a 62-55 decision at No. 21 Cal Poly Pomona (20-4, 15-3 CCAA) on Saturday afternoon at Kellogg Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars found themselves down 16-4 after the first quarter was completed.
  • A 5-0 run by CSUSM capped by a Tatum Tamashiro 3-pointer cut CPP's lead to 18-12 with 8:10 remaining in the second quarter.
  • The Broncos closed out the second quarter on a 9-2 run to take a 40-23 lead into the break.
  • CPP shot 60.7% (17-of-28) in the first half to CSUSM's 28.1% (9-of-32).
  • CPP's Sydney Nelson led all scorers in the first 20 minutes with 16 points after going 7-of-7 from the field and 2-of-2 at the free throw line.
  • The Broncos took their largest lead of the game at 8:55 of the third quarter on a Nelson layup that made it 42-23.
  • CSUSM went on a 12-0 run capped by another 3-pointer by Tamashiro that made it a single-digit lead at 42-35 for the Broncos with four minutes remaining in the third quarter.
  • CSUSM outscored CPP 17-8 in the third quarter to cut the gap to 48-40 with 10 minutes remaining in the game.
  • A Maddie Leiva 3-pointer made it 50-47 with 8:05 remaining in the fourth quarter.
  • CSUSM made it a two-point game (54-52) on a 3-pointer by Rose Morse with 4:59 on the clock.
  • The Broncos closed out the game with an 8-2 run to clinch the win at 62-54.
 
FAST BREAKS
  • The Cougars shot 34.5% (20-of-58) while the Broncos came in at 51.0% (26-of-51).
  • CPP won the battle of the boards at 36-28, but CSUSM pulled down more offensive boards, 12-10.
  • CSUSM tallied 20 points off CPP's 17 turnovers while the Broncos only capitalized with 13 points on the Cougars' 15 turnovers.
  • The Cougars recorded 12 points off fast breaks while the Broncos only finished with six.
  • Tatum Tamashiro matched her career high of five made 3-pointers, a feat she has tallied four previous times this season.
  • CSUSM went 7-of-7 at the free throw line while CPP was 8-of-10.
  • CSUSM leads the all-time series against CPP at 9-8 and is 4-5 when playing in Kellogg Arena.
 
UP NEXT
The Cougars will return to The Sports Center on Monday to begin their final homestand of the 2024-25 season. The Cougars will host Sonoma State at 5 p.m. to make up the game that was postponed back on Dec. 21.
