CSUSM Eliminated From CCAA Tournament with Losses to CPP, SF State

POMONA, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team (27-19) was eliminated from its first-ever CCAA Tournament as it fell 10-3 to Cal Poly Pomona (31-20) in its first game of the day before falling 10-9 in 10 innings in an elimination game against San Francisco State (30-23) on Thursday at Scalinos Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Broncos took a 6-0 lead in the top of the third on an RBI fielder's choice to second by Jack Sanders, a two-run single to left by AJ Nimeh, a two-run double to left center by Darius Price and an RBI single to short by Nick Lugo.
  • CPP added two more runs in the top of the fifth on a bases-loaded groundout to first by Lugo and a bases-loaded walk by Brent Cota to go up 8-0.
  • Reece broke up the shutout with his 10th homer of the season on a solo blast to left in the bottom of the seventh to cut the deficit to 8-1.
  • A Sanders RBI double to left and an RBI groundout by Nimeh put the Broncos up 10-1 in the top of the eighth.
  • CSUSM matched CPP in the bottom of the inning with a pair of runs coming from a Bronco error at third that scored Sean McGrew and an RBI single through the left side by Reece to make it 10-3.
 
QUICK HITS
  • Phoenix Sommay extended his reached-base streak to 40 games after getting hit by a pitch for the 21st time this season – a new single-season record at CSUSM. His reached-base streak is the third longest in program history.
  • CPP starter Noel Soto (8-2) earned the win after striking out four while allowing three runs on six hits, a walk and a hit-by-pitch in 7.1 innings.
  • CSUSM starter Roman Connolly (5-3) took the loss after allowing six runs on four hits and three walks in 2.2 innings.
  • Reece posted his team-leading 14th multi-RBI game of the year.
  • This was CSUSM's first-ever CCAA Tournament game.
  • The loss meant the Cougars had to face fourth-seeded San Francisco State in an elimination game at 7:20 p.m.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • CSUSM started the scoring with an RBI double to right center by McGrew scored Rivera and gave the Cougars a 1-0 lead in the top of the second.
  • The Cougars got out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the second as CSUSM turned a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning.
  • SF State took the lead with a three-run blast off the top of the batter's eye by Justin Johnson in the bottom of the third inning to go up 3-1.
  • The Cougars cut the deficit to 3-2 in the top of the fourth with an RBI double to the left-center gap by Chesterton to score McGrew all the way from first.
  • CSUSM's offense came alive in the top of the seventh inning as the Cougars scored five runs on three hits. Cameron Mahaffy tied the game at 3-3 after being hit by a pitch with bases loaded before a two-run single through the right side by Castaneda put CSUSM up 5-3. Mahaffy then scored on a wild pitch before Chesterton hit an RBI single to right to make it a 7-3 ballgame.
  • A sacrifice fly to right by Derek Laferriere cut the Gators' deficit to three at 7-4 in the bottom of the seventh.
  • Reece crushed his second homer of the day and his team-leading 11th of the season to left in the top of the eighth inning to put the Cougars back up by four at 8-4.
  • In the bottom of the eighth, SF State cut CSUSM's lead to 8-6 with an RBI single through the left side by AJ Schrader and another RBI single down the left field line by Jacob French.
  • A bases-loaded walk by Phoenix Sommay put CSUSM ahead 9-6 in the top of the ninth.
  • Down to their final three outs in the bottom of the ninth, the Gators rallied with an RBI single to right by Schrader and a sac fly to right by Anthony Alvarez. A two-out RBI single up the middle by Armando Murillo knotted the game at 9-all before a groundout to second sent the game to extras.
  • After CSUSM went scoreless in the top of the 10th inning, back-to-back SF State singles put runners on the corners with one out. Kyle Olimpia hit a fly ball to right that was deep enough to score pinch-runner Nicholas Cook and give the Gators the win.
 
QUICK HITS
  • Gator reliever Mickey Radanovich (4-1) earned the win after throwing one inning with nothing allowed.
  • Cougar reliever Spencer Anderson (3-2) took the loss after allowing one run on two hits while striking out one in two-thirds of an inning.
  • CSUSM's pitching staff combined for a season-high 14 strikeouts with Nolan Long punching out seven in 4.1 innings and Preston Kelly striking out six in 4.2 to go along with Anderson's one.
  • Long's seven strikeouts tied his season high set on April 20 against San Francisco State at home. Both of his seven-strikeout performances are the most by a Cougar pitcher this season.
  • Sommay extended his reached-base streak to 41 games with his walk in the top of the ninth. He's now two games shy of tying the program record.
