No. 7 CSUSM Splits CCAA Series with SF State

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The No. 7 Cal State San Marcos softball team (12-7, 6-6 CCAA) earned a CCAA series split with San Francisco State (7-13, 4-8 CCAA) on Saturday, falling 1-0 in 11 innings in Saturday's opener before recording a 9-5 in the series closer.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars' best chance came in the bottom of the eighth with the bases loaded and no outs. Arredondo and Coyle led off the inning with singles and Jillian Albayati drew an intentional walk before SFSU pitcher Mari Takeda Bajan retired the next three Cougars.
  • In a true pitching duel, neither team scored until the top of the 11th when Phoebe Schultz hit a solo home run to left to put the Gators up 1-0.
     
QUICK HITS
  • CSUSM reliever Savannah Coyle (4-5) took the loss after 4.2 innings, allowing one run on three hits, one walk and one hit batter.
  • SFSU starter Mari Bajan Takeda (3-3) pitched the entire 11 innings for the win, tossing a shutout on nine hits and six walks while striking out seven batters.
  • The Cougars left 15 runners on base.
  • This was CSUSM's fifth extra-inning game of the season and longest to date.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars got on the board first with an Albayati sacrifice fly that plated Waymire.
  • CSUSM added another run in the third after Waymire led the inning off with a double and later scored on Savannah Coyle's RBI single through the right side to make it 2-0 CSUSM.
  • In the fourth, CSUSM took a 5-0 lead after a bases-loaded walk and an Albayati 2-RBI single to right field.
  • The Cougars went up 6-0 in the fifth on a Waymire RBI double to center field.
  • The Gators prevented the shutout with two runs in the top of the sixth, scoring both on a Makenzie Stenson double down the right line.
  • CSUSM added three more runs in the bottom of the frame as Alvarez hit a 2-RBI single through the left side, and Guiliano followed with an RBI single to right field to make it 9-2.
  • SF State pushed three more runs across in the top of the seventh on Mia Misasi's RBI single through the right side before Daniella Guerrera doubled down the right line to plate the final two runs.

  • CSUSM starter Dahlia Fink (1-1) got her first win as a Cougar, going 5.2 innings and allowing two runs on four hits and one walk while striking out one batter.
  • SF State's Elise Roy (3-5) took the loss after 3.1 innings of work, giving up five runs (four earned) on six hits and two walks.

UP NEXT
CSUSM will take a break from conference play next week, hosting Biola on Friday and Azusa Pacific on Saturday. Both doubleheaders are set to begin at noon.
