SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Having to wait out a long rain delay, the Cal State San Marcos baseball team (15-9, 14-5 CCAA) persevered and took the series lead in the third game against No. 19 Cal State Monterey Bay (18-9, 14-5 CCAA) by a score of 9-4 on Saturday at CSUSM Baseball Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- CSUSM took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as Mahaffy hit a sacrifice fly to center and scored Sommay.
- In the top of the second, the Otters knotted the game at 1-1 on an RBI single by Evan Stauch.
- CSUMB jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the top of the third with an RBI double to left center by Nico Hartojo and an RBI single through the left side by Cole Murchison.
- The rain put a stop to things in the bottom of the third inning, putting the game into a four-hour delay.
- When play resumed at 4 p.m., the Cougars wasted no time and tied the game at 3-all on an RBI single to center by Mahaffy and a sac fly to center by Rivera.
- CSUMB retook the lead at 4-3 in the top of the fourth with an RBI single to center by Brady Miguel.
- After a couple of scoreless innings, CSUSM took the lead at 5-4 with an RBI single up the middle by Teunissen and a sac fly to left by Mahaffy in the bottom of the seventh.
- The Cougars put the game out of reach in the bottom of the eighth with a four-run inning highlighted by a solo shot from Castaneda and RBI singles from Mahaffy, Ethan Rivera and Mateo Lake.

QUICK HITS
- CSUSM reliever Spencer Anderson (1-0) earned the win after striking out three while allowing a run on seven hits and a hit-by-pitch in 4.0 innings.
- Otter reliever Ryan Platero (4-1) took the loss after allowing five runs (three earned) on three hits, a walk and a hit-by-pitch in 2.1 innings.
- Preston Kelly earned his fourth save of the season as he struck out four and allowed just two hits in 2.0 innings.
- This is the second consecutive year in which CSUSM has taken two games in a series against CSUMB and is a first when playing in San Marcos.
- The Cougars set a season-high with four sac flies and six stolen bases.
- Sommay extended his reached-base streak to 19 games and hitting streak to 15 games.
- This was Mahaffy's seventh multi-RBI game of the season and his second four-RBI game. He's now tied with Luke Reece for the team lead.

Originally supposed to be a doubleheader, Saturday's long rain delay has now forced the series finale to be scheduled for Sunday at 11 a.m. A final call on the game's fate will be based on weather and field conditions early Sunday morning.
