CSUSM Pummels CSUDH for Fifth Consecutive Win, 15-5

CARSON, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team (6-5, 5-1 CCAA) captured its fifth consecutive victory and took a two-game lead in its series at Cal State Dominguez Hills (6-9, 3-3 CCAA) with a 15-5 win at Toro Field on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A leadoff homer to center by Trey Winget put the Toros up 1-0 in the bottom of the first.
  • Scalley drove in the Cougars' first run in the top of the second with an RBI single to right center before Potter gave CSUSM its first lead of the day at 3-1 with a two-run shot to left.
  • In the top of the fourth, Sommay cleared the bases and brought three runs home on a double to right with two outs while giving the Cougars a 6-1 lead.
  • CSUSM increased the lead to 7-1 in the top of the fifth as Rivera delivered an RBI single to right with two outs.
  • The Cougars tacked on two more runs in the top of the sixth on an RBI single to left by Luna and a sacrifice fly to right by Teunissen to go up 9-1.
  • CSUDH cut the deficit to 9-5 with a two-out RBI single to center by CJ Masciel, another RBI single to center by Alex Sepulveda and a two-run single to left by Noah Karliner in the bottom of the sixth.
  • CSUSM cleared the bases twice in the top of the ninth. Potter hit a three-run double down the left field line to put the Cougars up 12-5 before Teunissen connected on his own three-run double to make it a 15-5 game.
 
QUICK HITS
  • Cougar starter Conner Gleissner (3-1) earned his third consecutive win after striking out four and allowing four runs on eight hits and two walks in 5.2 innings.
  • Toro starter Julian Diaz (3-1) took the loss after surrendering nine runs (eight earned) on 13 hits while striking out six in 6.0 innings.
  • CSUSM's five-game winning streak is tied for the best in program history. The Cougars accomplished the feat on four other occasions with the last being Feb. 3-18, 2018.
  • At 5-1 to begin CCAA play, this is the Cougars' best-ever start to conference action.
  • The Cougars tallied a season-high 17 hits, 15 runs and six doubles.
  • This was the first time CSUSM earned back-to-back wins against CSUDH in Carson since 2018.
 
UP NEXT
CSUSM will go for the series win against CSUDH on Sunday with an 11 a.m. doubleheader at Toro Field.
