No. 7 CSUSM Sweeps MSUB in Two Run-Ruled Games

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The No. 7 Cal State San Marcos softball team (4-1) closed out the CUI Kickoff Classic with two run-ruled wins of 14-2 and 13-3 over Montana State Billings (1-4) on Sunday at CSUSM Softball Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • MSUB took a 1-0 lead in the opening frame on a CSUSM error.
  • CSUSM answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame on a Coyle RBI double to right center and a bases-loaded groundout.
  • The Cougars doubled their lead in the bottom of the third. Deplitch led off with a single, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a MSUB error. Waymire followed with CSUSM's first home run of the season, crushing the ball over the right center wall to make it 4-1.
  • CSUSM put together a five-run, four-hit third inning that made it 9-1.
  • In the fourth, the Cougars put up five more runs on six hits that was highlighted by a Czar Fleischman RBI double to make it 14-1.
  • MSUB's Kalehauwehe hit a solo home run in the top of the fifth to end the scoring at 14-2.

QUICK HITS
  • CSUSM starter Savannah Coyle (1-0) collected her first win of 2024 after going five innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on nine hits and no walks while striking out one batter.
  • MSUB starter Felicia De La Torre (0-1) went two innings, allowing six runs on six hits and two walks.
  • Waymire's home run was the fourth of her career at CSUSM.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Listed as the away team, CSUSM took an early 3-0 lead in the first inning on RBI doubles by Coyle and Albayati in addition to Kestler's RBI single.
  • The Cougars added a run in the third on a Delaney Prater sacrifice fly.
  • MSUB got on the board on a Penney solo home run to center to make it 4-1.
  • CSUSM posted three more runs in the fourth on a fielder's choice, a Donnelly RBI single and a Kestler sacrifice fly to make it 7-1.
  • The Yellowjackets put up two runs in the bottom of the fourth on a double and sacrifice fly.
  • A six-run fifth inning put CSUSM up 13-3 on two bases-loaded walks, an MSUB error, sacrifice fly and RBI singles by Albayati and Deplitch.
  • After giving up a leadoff single to begin the bottom of the fifth, relief pitcher Dahlia Fink retired the next three batters to close out the game at 13-3.
     
QUICK HITS
  • CSUSM starter Jayline Sloss (3-0) gave up one run on three hits in three innings in the circle while striking out four batters to pick up the win
  • MSUB's Caitlyn James (0-3) took the loss after four innings of work, relinquishing seven runs on 10 hits and one walk.
  • With the two wins, CSUSM is 5-1 in the all-time series against MSUB.
  • The previous four match-ups were played at neutral venues.
