AZUSA, Calif. – The No. 7 Cal State San Marcos softball team (2-1) started the day with a 4-0 shutout over host Azusa Pacific (0-3) before falling in an 8-4 10-inning heartbreaker to No. 21 Colorado Christian (3-0) in the nightcap on Saturday in the CUI Kickoff Classic.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- CSUSM got on the board in the third inning after Morales drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a passed ball before scoring on Donnelly's RBI double to right center. Donnelly scored on Coyle's single through the left side to put CSUSM up 2-0.
- CSUSM made it 3-0 on Ellison Hazlett's RBI single through the left side that plated Aneesa Arredondo after she led off with a double down the left line.
- After Madison Waymire singled through the left side, Coyle drove her in on a single up the middle to make it 4-0.
QUICK HITS
- CSUSM starter Jayline Sloss (2-0) picked up her second win of the season after throwing five scoreless innings, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out two.
- Savannah Coyle collected her first save of 2024 after tossing two shutout innings, allowing just one hit and fanning one batter.
- APU starter Felicia De La Torre (0-1) went 6.1 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out six.
- CSUSM leads the all-time series at 18-12 and is 10-7 when playing in Azusa.
- CSUSM has won the last three meetings against APU that included a 7-1 win in the 2023 NCAA West Regional held in Rohnert Park.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- CCU went up 2-0 in the top of the fourth on a two-run home run by Kayla Middleton.
- CCU extended its lead to 4-0 in the top of the fifth, taking advantage of a CSUSM error.
- CSUSM got on the board in the bottom of the fifth, scoring on a bases-loaded walk and a passed ball to make it 4-3 CCU.
- CSUSM's first hit of the game didn't come until the bottom of the sixth when Olivia Rivera knocked out a one-out single up the middle.
- After a Waymire one-out double to right center in the bottom of the seventh, Donnelly evened the game at 4-4 with an RBI single to the same direction.
- CCU pushed four runs across in the top of the 10th after beginning the inning with a runner on second.
- CSUSM was not able to answer in the bottom of the frame as CCU was able to retire the side.
QUICK HITS
- CSUSM starter Dillyn Collins (0-0) went 4.2 innings in her collegiate debut, allowing four runs (two earned) on four hits while striking out two batters.
- Dahlia Fink (0-1) took the loss after relinquishing three runs (two earned) on six hits in 4.2 innings.
- CCU starter Hanna Espinoza (1-0) tossed two shutout innings, walking and striking out two batters.
- This wass CSUSM's first-ever loss to CCU after two previous wins, including a 7-1 victory at the CUI Kickoff last season and a 3-2 win in 2012.
