SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The No. 4 Cal State San Marcos softball team (10-3, 4-2 CCAA) split Friday's doubleheader against Sonoma State (4-5, 1-1 CCAA) at CSUSM Softball Field. The Cougars took game one 3-2 in eight innings before falling 13-12 in the nightcap. Â

HOW IT HAPPENED
- SSU went up 1-0 after a solo home run by Skylar Linnane in the top of the fourth inning.
- The Cougars took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the frame after Kestler knocked an RBI triple down the right line and later scored on a Jillian Albayati sacrifice fly to center.
- The Seawolves evened the game at 2-2 in the top of the seventh after Rylee Nishimoto hit a two-out single up the middle that plated Anna Zoia-Buesche.
- After giving up a leadoff single in the top of the eighth, relief pitcher Savannah Coyle retired the next two batters before picking off pinch runner Amari Houston from third base.
- In the bottom of the eighth, Fleischman singled up the middle and advanced to second after Madison Waymire drew a walk and scored on a Guiliano full-swing double off the right-center wall.

- Savannah Coyle (4-1) picked up the win after coming into the game in relief, tossing two innings and allowing one unearned run on three hits.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- CSUSM took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI groundout by Coyle.
- SSU evened the game at 1-all on Carissa Marquez's RBI infield single in the top of the second.
- The Cougars batted around in the bottom of the second to take a 7-1 lead. CSUSM scored on a fielder's choice, 2-RBI single by Waymire and a bases-clearing double by Donnelly.
- CSUSM extended its lead in the fourth to 8-1 on an RBI single by Coyle.
- Both teams posted three runs in the fifth. SSU scored on RBI singles by Jasmine Moreno and Taylor Rapp as well as a fielder's choice. Pinch hitter Delaney Prater hit an RBI single up the middle to plate Arredondo to lead off with a triple before Waymire knocked out a two-run homer to make it 11-4 CSUSM.
- SSU put up six runs in the top of the sixth that was highlighted by a Skylar Linnane grand slam to make it 11-10 CSUSM.
- The Seawolves took a 13-11 lead in the seventh on a Moreno RBI single and a Rapp groundout.
- CSUSM attempted a comeback in the bottom of the seventh with a two-out double by Donnelly followed by back-to-back singles by Coyle and Fleischman that made it 13-12 before SSU pitcher Charlie Johnson recorded the final out.
QUICK HITS
- Coyle took the loss after going six innings, with a break in the fifth and part of the sixth innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits and three walks while striking out one batter.
- SSU reliever Charlie Johnson (3-2) recorded the win after six innings of action in the circle, allowing six runs on 10 hits and four walks.
- Waymire and Coyle each tallied their second three-hit game of the season.
- Coyle's 5-RBI performance is the first of her collegiate career.
