Late Run Lifts Toros Over Cougars, 79-75

CARSON, Calif. – The RV Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team (18-5, 15-3 CCAA) dropped a 79-75 decision at Cal State Dominguez Hills  (13-11, 10-8 CCAA) on Thursday night in the Torodome.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars went 5-of-8 from the 3-point line for a 28-18 lead following the first quarter.
  • CSUSM took its largest lead of the first half on a Ranson 3-pointer that made it 36-24 with 6:55 remaining in the second quarter.
  • Despite being outscored 21-18 in the second quarter, the Cougars took a 46-41 lead into the locker room.
  • The Cougars shot 54.8% (17-of-31) in the opening 20 minutes while the Toros turned in a 45.9% (17-of-37).
  • The Toros cut CSUSM's lead to one point on three occasions, but the Cougars rallied and held on to take a 61-58 lead into the final 10 minutes of play.
  • CSUDH took its first lead of the game on a Rebecca Penner 3-pointer to make it 72-70 with 3:17 on the clock.
  • The Cougars made a quick 3-pointer by Ranson to retake the lead at 73-72 with 2:41 remaining.
  • Two sets of made free throws by Williams and Goldsmith gave the Toros a 76-73 lead with 1:48 remaining in the game.
  • Ranson came up clutch again with a jumper to cut CSUDH's lead to 76-75 at 1:33.
  • Despite CSUDH shooting 50% at the free throw line in the final 31 seconds, it was enough for the Toros to clinch the win.

FAST BREAK
  • The Cougars remain in first place in the CCAA standings with a two-game lead over second-place Chico State.
  • Vasquez officially joined the CSUSM 1,000-point club with her 21 points against CSUDH. She now has 1,005 points in her CSUSM career and exactly 1,600 points in her complete collegiate career.
  • Vasquez narrowly missed out on her 15th double-double of the season, finishing with 21 points and nine rebounds.
  • CSUSM led for 89.5% (35:49) of the game while CSUDH led for just 7.5% (2:59).
  • CSUSM got 21 points from its bench while CSUDH only got six points.
  • The Toros converted 13 points on CSUSM's 10 turnovers while CSUDH only committed seven turnovers which the Cougars scored six points on.
  • CSUDH's Asia Jordan and Nala Williams tallied 21 and 20 points, respectively.
  • The Cougars are 8-12 against the Toros in the all-time series and 2-7 when playing in the Torodome.
