Cougars Begin Final Homestand with Loss to Broncos

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men's basketball team (8-12, 7-7 CCAA) began its final homestand of the season with a 71-56 loss to Cal Poly Pomona (7-11, 6-8 CCAA) on Thursday night at The Sports Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Broncos began the game up 9-0 before Foster scored the first points for the Cougars on a layup to make it 9-2 at the 18:07 mark of the period.
  • CPP took an 11-point lead on a fast-break dunk by Michael Ofoegbu with 17:22 to go in the half.
  • CSUSM cut CPP's lead to 20-14 with a layup by Chris Howard and 3-pointer by Max Tengan with 11:21 to go in the period.
  • Following a Malachi Murrell 3-pointer to give the Broncos a 23-14 lead, the Cougars went on a 6-0 run and cut the deficit to 23-20 on a pull-up jumper by Collins with 7:57 left in the half.
  • Down by two at 27-25, Charlie Henderson gave the Cougars a 28-27 halftime lead as he nailed a 3-pointer with four second remaining.
  • CSUSM shot 36% (10-of-27) in the first half while holding CPP to 29% (9-of-31).
  • The Cougars took their largest lead of the game on the first possession of the second half as Foster made a layup to go up 30-27.
  • Seven consecutive points gave the Broncos the lead for good at 34-30 with 17:47 to play.
  • CPP once again went up by double digits on a Chris Gayles Jr. fast-break layup at 45-34 with 13:37 to go.
  • The Broncos took their largest lead of the game at 61-44 on a second-chance driving layup by Brandon Porter with 5:30 remaining.
  • CPP kept CSUSM at bay for the remainder of the contest, maintaining a cushion of at least 11 points in the final five minutes.
  • The Cougars went cold from the field in the second half at 27.3% (9-of-33) while the Broncos shot a scorching 57.1% (16-of-28).
 
FAST BREAKS
  • CSUSM's 56 points and 31.7 field-goal percentage (19-of-60) were both season lows.
  • CPP ended the game shooting 42.4% (25-of-59) from the field.
  • Collins' 19 points led the contest.
  • The Cougars scored 19 points off the Broncos' 15 turnovers while CPP only scored eight off CSUSM's 13 turnovers.
  • CSUSM also had the advantage in steals at 10-7.
  • CPP had the upper hand in rebounds (45-36), assists (13-8) and blocked shots (6-3).
  • The Broncos were able to capitalize on second-chance shots, scoring 16 to the Cougars' six.
  • The loss dropped CSUSM to seventh in the CCAA standings, one game behind sixth-place San Francisco State and Cal State East Bay.
