CSUSM to Play First CCAA Home Games Against CSUSB, No. 2 CPP

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos women's soccer team (4-2-3, 1-1-0 CCAA) will play its CCAA home opener at The Cage against Cal State San Bernardino (2-2-4, 1-0-1 CCAA) on Friday at 12:30 p.m. before welcoming No. 2 Cal Poly Pomona (8-0-1, 1-0-1 CCAA) on Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
 
LAST WEEK
  • CSUSM began CCAA play at Sonoma on Friday but came out on the losing end thanks to a game-clinching 89th-minute goal by the Seawolves.
  • The Cougars followed that up with a strong performance at Humboldt State, seeing goals from Natalie Paulson, Natalia Huntington and the eventual game-winning header by Danielle Paulson to earn a 3-2 victory.

CCAA HOME OPENER AGAINST THE COYOTES
  • CSUSB began CCAA play with a scoreless draw against Cal State Monterey Bay before ending the weekend with a 3-0 win against San Francisco State.

2023 CCAA TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONSHIP REMATCH
  • CSUSM and CPP will meet for the first time since the Cougars won the CCAA Tournament Championship against the Broncos in 2023.
  • Prior to facing the Cougars, the Broncos will head to Cal State East Bay on Friday night.
  • CPP came in at No. 2 in this week's United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division II Top 25 Poll.

2024 OUTLOOK
  • After a historic 2023 season, CSUSM was just barely picked to finish second in 2024 CCAA Preseason Coaches Poll, finishing one point behind Cal Poly Pomona.
  • The Cougars' roster of 32 includes 22 returners and 10 newcomers who are all freshmen.
  • Returners Natalia Huntington, Nani Kia'aina, Allison Marcure and Natalie Paulson were named to the 2024 CCAA Women's Soccer Watchlist after earning first or second-team All-CCAA honors in 2023 or were voted to the CCAA All-Tournament Team.
  • Natalie Paulson was the 2023 CCAA Player and Defender of the Year and went on to earn All-America first-team and All-Region honors.

THE RENNEISEN FILE

  • Head coach Bobby Renneisen enters his 11th year in charge of the women's program and 19th overall at CSUSM.
  • Renneisen coached the Cougars to their first CCAA Tournament Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance in 2023 with an 11-3-6 (6-0-5 CCAA) record while finishing second in the CCAA standings.
  • Renneisen and his assistant coaches were named the 2023 United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division II West Region Staff of the Year.
