IRVINE, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team began its 2023 season with a 2-0 win at Concordia University Irvine on Saturday at Golden Eagles Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Scoreless after 45 minutes, CUI had a slight shot lead over CSUSM at 6-4 while putting five shots on goal to the Cougars' three.
• That all changed in the second half as Meinardus scored CSUSM's first goal of the season in the 78th minute. Meinardus' first-career goal came on a penalty kick into the left side of the goal to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead.
• A free kick a few yards out of the box found the head of Meinardus again in the 84th minute, who put it into the net from six yards out to give CSUSM a 2-0 lead.

QUICK KICKS

• CSUSM snapped a three-game losing streak to CUI – its first win over the Golden Eagles since 2018.
• Meinardus led the game with five shots while putting three on goal.
• CSUSM keeper Tony Flores recorded the shutout with seven saves for the day.
• The Cougars outshot the Golden Eagles by a 15-12 margin and had an 11-6 in the second half.
• CSUSM had possession for 64% of the match.
• Both sides took three corner kicks.
