CSUSM Dominates Westmont with 5-0 Shutout

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos women's soccer team (3-1-0) posted a dominating 5-0 shutout victory against Westmont (2-1-1) on Thursday afternoon at The Cage.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • CSUSM began the scoring in the 37th minute. After Embree took a shot from a corner that bounced off the Westmont keeper,  Marsh picked up the rebound right in front of the keeper and put a high shot into the net from three yards out to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead.
  • A pass from Kia'aina in front of the box to Ramos on the left side of the box allowed Ramos to put a shot into the upper right corner of the net to put CSUSM out front at 2-0 in the 53rd minute.
  • A quick pass from Kia'aina in the center of Westmont territory allowed Jensen to take a shot from the top right corner of the box and put the ball into the bottom right portion of the goal to put the Cougars up 3-0 in the 57th minute.
  • Delgado took possession of the ball near the left side line and continued to dribble the ball into the top left corner of the box. She then sailed a shot over the keeper's head and into the center portion of the goal to give CSUSM a four-goal lead in the 61st minute.
  • Delgado then scored her second goal of the day in the 66th minute on a foot-race goal to a cleared ball in the top right corner of the box. Delgado gained possession and proceeded to shoot the ball into the top middle portion of the goal to give the Cougars a 5-0 lead.
 
QUICK KICKS
  • CSUSM's five-goal margin of victory was its largest since defeating Bethesda 9-0 in 2014 and was the largest in the all-time series against the Warriors.
  • The Cougars ended the game with a 13-5 shot advantage as well as a 4-2 corner kick advantage.
  • Marsh led the game with three shot attempts.
  • CSUSM had possession for 54% of the game.
  • Marsh's goal was her first of the season while Ramos and Jensen scored their second. Delgado's two goals were her first of the season.
  • Kia'aina's two assists gave her a team-leading three for the season while Embree's assist was her second.
  • The Cougars are now 4-2-1 in the all-time series against the Warriors and are 3-1 at home.

CSUSM will play the fifth game of its six-game homestand on Wednesday, Sept. 20 when it host Biola at 12:30 p.m.
