CSUSM to Continue Homestand Against Westmont

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos women's soccer team (2-1-0) will play the fourth game of its six-game homestand against NCAA Division II newcomer Westmont (2-0-1) on Thursday at 12:30 p.m. in The Cage.
 
LAST WEEK
  • CSUSM began the week with a 3-0 shutout against Fresno Pacific on Thursday.
  • The Cougars saw goals from Nani Kia'aina (16'), Lily Jensen (56') and Danielle Paulson (67') in the win against the Sunbirds.
  • CSUSM outshot FPU 25-7 and posted its most shots since beginning NCAA Division II play (2015-present) and their most since tallying 40 against Bethesda in 2014.
  • The Cougars concluded the week with a 2-0 loss against Point Loma – a team that was receiving votes in last week's United Soccer Coaches Top 25 Poll.
  • Gabby Marsh led CSUSM with four shots off the bench against the Sea Lions.

  • CSUSM ranks 10th nationally and leads the CCAA with 8.33 corner kicks per game.
  • The Cougars are putting 8.33 shots on goal per game to lead the CCAA and rank 37th nationally.
  • CSUSM also leads the conference with 1.67 assists per game and ranks 45th nationally.
  • The Cougars lead the league in shots per game with 15.
  • CSUSM has the second-best goals-against average in the CCAA at .667 while having the third-best scoring offense at 1.67.
  • Natalia Huntington has the 10th-best shot accuracy in Division II at .857 and leads the conference with 2.0 shots on goal per game.
  • Allison Marcure has the second-best goals-against average in the league at .667.

THURSDAY AGAINST WESTMONT

  • CSUSM will face Westmont for the second consecutive year on Thursday.
  • The Warriors are in their first year playing an NCAA Division II schedule with the PacWest Conference as they're in the process of transitioning from the NAIA.
  • Westmont began its season with a 2-2 draw at Cal Poly Pomona before a 1-0 win at Cal State San Bernardino and another 1-0 victory at NCAA Division I Cal State Bakersfield.
  • Sydney Reese leads the Warriors in points with three as she has one goal and an assist.
  • Last season, the Cougars suffered a 2-0 loss in Santa Barbara ­– its first meeting with Westmont since 2012.
  • Last year's Westmont team finished 16-1-3 overall and made it to the final site of the NAIA National Championship.
  • CSUSM leads the all-time series at 3-2-1 and is 2-1 against Westmont.
  • This will be the Warriors' first trip to San Marcos since 2012.
 
THIS YEAR'S COUGARS
  • CSUSM's 2023 roster consists of 31 student-athletes with 17 returners and 14 newcomers.
  • The Cougars' return top scorers Claire Hernandez, Diana Mendoza and Jenna Frankina as each posted two goals in 2022.
  • Hernandez earned All-CCAA second-team honors last season while Jenna Frankina, Natalia Huntington and Allison Marcure were honorable mentions.
  • Because of last season's second-team honor, Hernandez was listed on the CCAA's 2023 Preseason Watchlist.
  • Returning in goal for her redshirt junior season is Allison Marcure, who posted 51 saves and nine shutouts while playing all 1,620 minutes last season.

THE RENNEISEN FILE

  • Head coach Bobby Renneisen enters his ninth year in charge of the women's program and 17th overall at CSUSM.
  • Renneisen's 2018 team made its second consecutive CCAA Tournament appearance while also handing No. 1 UC San Diego its lone regular-season loss.
  • Between 2006-13, Renneisen was an assistant/associate head coach for both the men's and women's soccer teams.
  • As the women's head coach, Renneisen is 55-50-34 (.518) for his career with the Cougars.
