CSUSM to Kick Off 2023 Season on Thursday

SAN MARCOS, Calif. –  The Cal State San Marcos women's soccer team will kick off the 2023 season by hosting The Master's University (2-0-1) on Thursday at 4 p.m. at The Cage.

LAST SEASON
  • CSUSM finished the 2022 season in a three-way tie for fifth in the CCAA standings but was the odd team out when it came to participating in the conference tournament due to tiebreaker procedures.
  • The Cougars ended 2022 with just one loss in their final nine games while winning three and tying in five.
  • CSUSM had the 29th-best goals-against average in the nation last year at .667.

THIS YEAR'S COUGARS
  • CSUSM's 2023 roster consists of 31 student-athletes with 17 returners and 14 newcomers.
  • The Cougars' return top scorers Claire Hernandez, Diana Mendoza and Jenna Frankina as each posted two goals in 2022.
  • Hernandez earned All-CCAA second-team honors last season while Jenna Frankina, Natalia Huntington and Allison Marcure were honorable mentions.
  • Because of last season's second-team honor, Hernandez was listed on the CCAA's 2023 Preseason Watchlist.
  • Returning in goal for her redshirt junior season is Allison Marcure, who posted 51 saves and nine shutouts while playing all 1,620 minutes last season.
  • CSUSM tied for sixth with Cal Poly Humboldt in the 2023 CCAA Preseason Coaches Poll.

SEASON OPENER AGAINST THE MASTER'S

  • This will be the 10th overall meeting between the Cougars and Mustangs since the start of the series in 2007, and it will be the first contest between the two since 2014.
  • CSUSM and TMU are knotted at 4-4-1 in the all-time series.
  • The Cougars are 1-3 at home against the Mustangs.
  • The Master's is 2-0-1 to begin the year with a scoreless tie against Saint Katherine, a 3-1 win against UC Merced and a 2-0 victory against Soka.
  • Harmony Rohde has been the Mustangs' top player to this point with two goals in 162 minutes of action.

THE RENNEISEN FILE

  • Head coach Bobby Renneisen enters his ninth year in charge of the women's program and 17th overall at CSUSM.
  • Renneisen's 2018 team made its second consecutive CCAA Tournament appearance while also handing No. 1 UC San Diego its lone regular-season loss.
  • Between 2006-13, Renneisen was an assistant/associate head coach for both the men's and women's soccer teams.
  • As the women's head coach, Renneisen is 53-49-34 (.515) for his career with the Cougars.
