Cougars Fall to Toros, 9-2; Rain Halts Second Game

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – In its CCAA home opener, the Cal State San Marcos baseball team (6-9, 0-5 CCAA) fell 9-2 to Cal State Dominguez Hills (10-5, 5-0 CCAA) in the first game of Friday's doubleheader at CSUSM Baseball Field before the second game was halted due to rain.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Dominguez Hills took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning with a sacrifice fly by Brock Denbo before an RBI single by Grant Decatrel.
  • The Toros doubled the score in the top of the fourth as Emilio Barrera scored on a CSUSM throwing error before an RBI single to third by Decatrel.
  • CSUSM cut the deficit to 4-1 in the bottom of the fourth as Ethan Rivera scored on an RBI single up the middle by Pacino.
  • CSUDH went up 5-1 in the top of the sixth with Denbo's second sac fly of the game to center.
  • Nick Schnopp came on to pinch hit in the bottom of the sixth and sent the first pitch he saw over the left field wall to cut the deficit to 5-2.
  • Scott Ogrin put the Toros up 6-2 in the top of the eighth with a solo shot to left.
  • In the top of the ninth, Vincent Temesvary had an RBI single to left before a two-run double by Ogrin made it a 9-2 game.
 
QUICK HITS
  • Toro starter Nico Martinez (3-0) earned the win as he went 6.0 innings with six strikeouts while allowing two earned runs.
  • Cougar starter Conner Gleissner (1-3) took the loss as he allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits and a walk in 4.0 innings.
  • Luke Reece improved his reached-base streak to 14 games.
 
UP NEXT
The second game of Friday's doubleheader was halted after three innings due to rain. It will continue tied 1-1 in the top of the fourth on Saturday at noon prior to the scheduled 2 p.m. game.
