Cougars Open Series with 9-6 Win Over Yellowjackets

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team (2-2) used a five-run eighth inning to win the series opener against Montana State Billings (2-1) on Thursday at CSUSM Baseball Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • CSUSM got on the board early with a two-run blast by Reece in the bottom of the first inning.
  • The Cougars went up 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI groundout by Niko Diaz.
  • A two-run homer by the Yellowjackets' James Anderson put MSUB within a run at 3-2 in the top of the sixth.
  • CSUSM made it 4-2 in the bottom of the sixth as Anthony Pacino scored on a Yellowjacket throwing error at third.
  • MSUB took a 5-4 lead in the top of the seventh with an RBI single by Zach Blaszak and a two-run double by Anderson.
  • CSUSM broke it wide open in the bottom of the eighth. Luna scored the tying run at 5-5 on a sacrifice bunt fielder's choice by Jesus Lopez. Pat MacDonald Jr. then tallied an RBI with a bases-loaded walk before Lopez scored on a wild pitch. Reece and Pacino also had bases-loaded walks to give CSUSM a 9-5 lead.
  • Closer Preston Kelly came on for the Cougars to begin the ninth and got a fly out and a strikeout on seven pitches. The Yellowjackets then made it difficult for him with a single and an RBI double to put MSUB within three at 9-6. Kelly then got a fly out to right to capture the win for the Cougars.
 
QUICK HITS
  • CSUSM reliever Josh Kim (1-0) picked up the win as he was the pitcher of record when the Cougars took the lead. He allowed nothing and struck out one on 13 pitches.
  • MSUB reliever Sage Wayment (0-1) took the loss after allowing five earned runs on two hits, one walk and a wild pitch in 1.2 innings.
  • Cougar starter Conner Gleissner fired a career-high eight strikeouts in 5.0 innings of work while allowing just three hits and one walk.
  • As a staff, CSUSM tallied 13 strikeouts while Billings only tallied three. The Cougars also issued just three walks to the Yellowjackets' six walks and two hit-by-pitches.
