LA MIRADA, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team (0-1) opened the 2023 season with a 13-5 loss at Biola (1-0) on Friday afternoon at Eagles Diamond.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Biola scored the first run of the season in the bottom of the second as James Whitman hit a two-out RBI single up the middle.
- CSUSM knotted the game at 1-1 in the top of the third. After Lopez reached on an error and advanced to third on a double from Pacino, an RBI groundout by Davis brought Lopez home for the Cougars' first run of the year.
- The Eagles took control of the game in the bottom of the third with a three-run homer by Wyatt Duncan and a two-run blast by Taylor Justus to make it 6-1.
- Rivera began the top of the fourth with a leadoff triple down the right field line before scoring on an RBI groundout by Pat MacDonald Jr. to cut the deficit to 6-2.
- Biola struck again with four more runs in the bottom of the fourth with a solo homer by Brenden Bell, a bases-loaded walk by Austin Carillo and a two-run double by Justus to go up 10-2.
- The Cougars struck quick in the top of the fifth with a leadoff homer by Pacino before a bases-loaded single to left by Rivera to make it 10-4.
- With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Duncan hit another homer with a solo blast to make it 11-4.
- A two-out solo shot by Lopez decreased the Cougars' deficit in the top of the eighth to 11-5.
- In the bottom of the eighth, Biola's AJ Ortiz led off with a solo homer before Whitman hit an RBI single with one out to make it 13-5.

- Biola starter Lucas Bixby (1-0) earned the win after striking out four and allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits in 5.0 innings.
- CSUSM starter Conner Gleissner (0-1) took the loss as he allowed six earned runs on five hits and two walks in 3.0 innings while striking out three.
- CSUSM and Biola are now knotted at 14-14 in the all-time series.
- The Eagles' victory snapped a four-game winning streak by the Cougars in the series.
