CSUSM Takes Series Against CUI

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team (6-4) picked up its second consecutive series win as it defeated Concordia University Irvine (5-6) by a score of 6-2 in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader before falling 3-0 in the series finale.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • CUI began the scoring in the top of the second with an RBI single to center by Dante Catalino to put the Golden Eagles up 1-0.
  • CSUSM took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI single to right by Morrell and a bases-loaded walk by Jake Adams.
  • The Cougars doubled their lead in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single to right by Rivera and a double steal that scored Diaz.
  • CSUSM went up 6-1 in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI single to left by Rivera and a sacrifice fly to left by Morrell.
  • CUI wrapped up the scoring in the top of the eighth with an RBI groundout by Nick Hansen that scored Shane Wallace.

  • CSUSM starter Pat MacDonald Jr. (2-0) allowed just one run on five hits, two walks and a hit-by-pitch in 6.0 innings while striking out two.
  • CUI starter Matt Des Marets (0-1) took the loss after allowing four runs on six hits and three walks while striking out two.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • CUI took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first thanks to RBI single up the middle by Jordan Bolden.
  • The Golden Eagles went up 2-0 in the top of the fourth as Chris Butterfield reached on a fielder's choice and picked up an RBI as Vito Fowler scored from third.
  • An RBI double to left center by Bolden gave CUI a 3-0 lead in the top of the fifth.
 
QUICK HITS
  • Golden Eagle starter Riley O'Sullivan (2-1) threw a seven-inning complete-game shutout as he allowed just three hits and two walks while striking out five.
  • Cougar starter Nolan Long (0-3) took the loss after allowing three runs on seven hits, one walk and one hit-by-pitch in 5.0 innings while striking out four.
  • Luke Reece has reached base in all nine games this season.
