Cougars, Seawolves Settle for 1-1 Draw

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos women's soccer team (7-2-4, 4-0-3 CCAA) moved its unbeaten streak to eight games as it earned a point with 1-1 draw against Sonoma State (2-7-4, 0-5-2 CCAA) on Friday at The Cage.
 
GOALS
SSU – 7' Mia Solorio-Smith (Assisted by Renee Ketner and Jenna Dean)
CSUSM – 70' Natalie Paulson (Assisted by Kaci Embree)
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A battle on the left side of the box led to a pass inward from Ketner. Solorio-Smith took a shot off her left foot on the first touch that made its way into the bottom left portion of the goal to the Seawolves a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute.
  • With one half in the books, CSUSM outshot SSU by a 7-2 margin while putting three shots on goal to the Seawolves' one. The Cougars also had the only four corner kicks of the period.
  • CSUSM scored the equalizer in the 70th minute of play. Off a corner kick from the right side by Embree, Paulson put a header into the net left side of the goal from 10 yards out to make it a 1-1 game.
 
QUICK KICKS
  • The Cougars maintained their second-place standing in the CCAA standings and now have 15 points – four points behind first-place Cal Poly Pomona and two points ahead of Cal State LA and Cal Poly Humboldt.
  • Paulson's third goal of the season was the first-ever goal scored by a CSUSM player in the six meetings with SSU.
  • Embree's assist was her third of the year.
  • The Cougars ended the game by outshooting the Seawolves at 15-3 while putting six shots on goal to SSU's two.
  • CSUSM had all eight corner kicks for the game.
  • The Cougars have posted at least 14 shots in six of the last seven contests.
  • Embree and Nani Kia'aina led the game with three shots each while Embree had a team-high two shots on goal.
  • Of CSUSM's total possessions, 70% of them occurred in SSU territory.
  • This was the second consecutive draw between the Cougars and Seawolves.

CSUSM will face Cal Poly Humboldt (10-2-2, 4-2-1 CCAA) in its final home game of the regular season on Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
