CSUSM Bounces Back with 5-1 Victory Against San Francisco State

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team (6-5-2, 3-2-1 CCAA) found its way back into the win column with a 5-1 victory over San Francisco State (3-7-2, 1-4-1 CCAA) on Sunday afternoon at The Cage.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In the 11th minute of action, Saldivar grabbed possession on the right side of the box before a low pass to Chavez, who was just left of the penalty kick marker. On the first touch, Chavez put a shot into the upper right portion of the goal to give CSUSM a 1-0 lead.
  • The Cougars went up 2-0 in the 23rd minute. On the right edge of the box, Patterson made a pass to Saldivar at the top of the box, who immediately passed it to Meinardus in the center of the box. With one dribble, Meinardus took a shot from six yards out into the lower left corner of the goal.
  • With one period in the books and a two-goal lead, CSUSM led the half in shots at 4-3 while putting three shots on goal to the Gators' one. SF State had the half's lone two corner kicks.
  • SF State opened the second half with a goal in the 48th minute as Gonzalez Ponce lobed a pass from the right edge of the box to Trujillo, who headed the ball into the net from six yards out and just left of the keeper to make it 2-1.
  • CSUSM punched in its third goal of the afternoon in the 72nd minute. With Meinardus controlling the ball on the left side of the field in Gator territory, he made a long pass to just outside the top left corner of the box to Alvarez, who immediately passed it to Collazos at the top of the box. Collazos then took a shot that ricocheted off the left post and into the bottom right corner of the goal to CSUSM ahead by two.
  • Exactly one minute later in the 73rd minute, Westwood brought the ball into the left side of the box before passing it over to Alvarez, who took a shot from six yards out off his left foot and past the SF State keeper to make it a 4-1 game.
  • CSUSM put the game away in the 82nd minute with its fifth goal of the day. After Barrosa dribbled the ball into the left side of the box, he made a pass to just in front of the right goal post before Collazos put the ball into center of the net with one touch.
 
QUICK KICKS
  • CSUSM ended the day outshooting SF State at 14-5 while putting eight shots on goal to the Gators's two. The Cougars have put up a double-digit shot total in all but one game this season.
  • The Cougars remain fifth in the CCAA standings with 10 points.
  • CSUSM last scored five goals in a game in 2016 with a 5-0 win against Cal Poly Humboldt.
  • This was the largest margin of victory by either team in the all-time series.
  • The Cougars are now 3-2 against the Gators when playing in San Marcos.
  • Meinardus tallied his team-leading fifth goal of the season and earned his second assist to top the Cougars in points at 12. His point total is tied for the second most in a single season at CSUSM in the NCAA Division II era (2015-present).
  • Collazos scored his third and fourth goals of the year to increase his point total to 11. This was the second time this season and third time in his career that he's had a two-goal day.
  • Alvarez's goal was his second of the season while his assist was his first.
  • Saldivar's two assists were the first two of the season.
  • Chavez's goal was the first of his career.
  • Barrosa and Patterson's assists were their firsts of the year.

CSUSM will play its next-to-last home game of the regular season on Friday as it welcomes sixth-place Sonoma State (5-6-2, 3-3-0 CCAA) to The Cage for a 3 p.m. match.
