No. 16/24 CSUSM's CCAA Win Streak Ends at CPP

POMONA, Calif. – The No. 16/24 Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team (10-2, 7-1 CCAA)
saw its CCAA regular-season 24-game win streak come to an end with a 68-65 heartbreaker at Cal Poly Pomona (9-3, 6-2 CCAA) on Saturday afternoon at Kellogg Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A Dynnah Buckner 3-pointer made it 7-2 at the 7:32 mark of the first quarter.
  • The Broncos went on top at 16-14 on a Kalaya Buggs layup with 27 seconds remaining in the opening quarter.
  • The Cougars trimmed the CPP lead to 18-17 on a Forrester 3-pointer from the corner to begin the second quarter.
  • In the second quarter, CSUSM evened the game at 32-all at 2:40 on a Charity Gallegos 3-pointer.
  • The Broncos closed out the first half with a 4-0 run to take a 38-32 lead into the locker room.
  • CSUSM shot 42.9% (12-of-28) from the field compared to CPP's 50% (16-of-32) in the first half.
  • Forrester's sixth 3-pointer of the game capped a 7-0 run to put CSUSM up 52-50 with 23 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
  • A pair of free throws evened the game at 52-all before CPP ended the third quarter on its third buzzer beater of the game when Alicia Jones stole the ball and went in for the layup to put the Broncos up 54-52.
  • A Forrester 3-pointer in front of the CSUSM bench, her seventh of the game, put the Cougars back in front at 55-54 with 8:45 remaining in the fourth quarter.
  • Gallegos drove in for a left-handed layup to put CSUSM up 57-54, but Ciara James answered with a put-back to close the game within one with 5:47 remaining in the game.
  • With 1:58 on the clock, CSUSM went up 63-60 when Vasquez circled around her defender for a layup.
  • Back-to-back old-fashion 3-point plays by Buggs gave CPP a 66-63 lead with 18 seconds remaining.
  • CSUSM cut it to 66-65 on a second-chance shot at 10 seconds on the clock, but a pair of made free throws by Buggs secured the Bronco win at 68-65.
  • Four of the nine lead changes in the game came in the fourth quarter.  

FAST BREAKS
  • CSUSM ended the game shooting 40.0% (22-of-55) from the field while the Broncos registered in at 44.1% (38.5).  
  • Forrester recorded a career-high seven 3-pointers in the contests, ranking her second in the CSUSM record books. Akayla Hackson holds the record with eight set on Feb. 21, 2019 at San Francisco State.
  • With 189 career 3-pointers, Forrester is one away from tying Cassie Damyanovich's record for the most in CSUSM history.
  • All 21 of Forrester's points came from behind the 3-point line as she shot 50% (7-of-14) from the field.
  • Dynnah Buckner went a perfect 8-of-8 at the charity stripe to compliment her two 3-pointers and pair of layups to finish with 18 points
  • With 974 career points, Dynnah Buckner is 26 points away from joining the 1,000 point club.
  • This marks CSUSM's first CCAA loss since Dec. 4, 2021 against Cal State East Bay (64-56) and first road loss since Jan. 23, 2020 at Sonoma State (54-50).
  • Both teams finished with 10 turnovers, but CPP converted 13 points off CSUSM's turnovers while the Cougars only capitalized with seven points.
  • The Broncos won the battle of the boards at 37-32 with 12 coming on the offensive side.
  • CPP played with only seven players with Jones leading the offense with 20 points and Buggs chipping in 14.
  • The all-times series between the Cougars and Broncos is now tied at 6-6.
  • CPP snapped CSUSM's four-game win streak against the Broncos.

The Cougars will embark on the second part of their four-game road trip next week, starting with a stop at Sonoma State on Thursday, Jan. 12 at 5:30 p.m.
