COURSE REPORT: The Cal State San Marcos men's cross country team took third place with a score of 102 in the Cal State Fullerton Mark Covert Classic Invite, defeating NCAA Division I's Pepperdine and University of San Diego.
FINISH LINE
- Sankalp Shastri was CSUSM's top runner, placing 23rd with a time of 26:23.5.
- Jimmy Byland followed right behind Sankalp with a 24th-place finish after recording a 26:23.9 time.
- Renton McGregor and Anthony Martinez collected 26th and 29th places with times of 26:25.4 and 26.44.8, respectively.
- Matt Frey rounded out CSUSM's scoring with a 32nd-place finish in a time of 26:48.0.
THOUGHTS FROM COACH OLSON
"Today was a great start for both of our teams. We held out several of our key men up front and the way this group ran is a testament to our team's depth. I asked the group to pack up and run within themselves for the first three miles, and they executed that really well. The whole group was able to pick it up the last two miles, and they worked really well with each other. The five freshmen were particularly impressive in handling their first 8000m race so well."
