CSUSM Falls 2-1 to No. 22 Point Loma

SAN DIEGO – In its first road game of the 2022 season, the Cal State San Marcos women's soccer team (0-1-1) took a 2-1 loss at No. 22 Point Loma (1-0) on Saturday afternoon at PLNU Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In the 18th minute of play, the Sea Lions' Shaw received a pass on the upper right side of the box from O'Malley at midfield. Shaw immediately took a shot from 25 yards out that grazed the keeper's fingertips as it went into the upper middle portion of the net to give PLNU a 1-0 lead.
  • After 45 minutes, CSUSM had an 8-4 shot advantage while both teams had one shot on goal.
  • CSUSM tied the game at 1-1 in the 61st minute. Mendoza came upon a stray ball off a PLNU defender in the middle of the box and sent the ball into the back left corner of the goal.
  • The Sea Lions retook the lead at 2-1 in the 83rd minute. Rogers received a deflected cross from the right side and shot the ball into the upper left corner of the net for the eventual game winner.
  • PLNU led the second half with a 6-4 shot advantage.
 
QUICK KICKS
  • CSUSM finished the match with more shots (12-10), but PLNU led the way in shots on goal (4-3) and corner kicks (5-3).
  • The goal by Mendoza was her first as a Cougar and was the first by a CSUSM player against PLNU since 2014.
  • The Sea Lions extended their winning streak against the Cougars to three games.
  • PLNU had possession for 64% of the match compared to CSUSM's 36%.

CSUSM will return to The Cage on Thursday to NCAA Division III opponent Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 4 p.m.
