SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos women's soccer team will begin its 2022 campaign by hosting Azusa Pacific on Thursday at 12:30 p.m. at The Cage before making the short drive down to No. 22 Point Loma on Saturday at 2 p.m.
A NEW SEASON AWAITS
- CSUSM will begin its 2022 season with a very young roster as it welcomes 13 incoming freshmen to its roster of 28.
- The Cougars return 12 from the 2021 squad, including top-goal scorers Chloe King, Sierra Moore and Hunter Morton and starting keeper Allison Marcure.
- Marcure ended the 2021 season with the 25th-best save percentage in Division II at .855 and ranked third in the CCAA.
- Graduate students Taylor Moorehead and Julia Atlee join CSUSM as transfers from San Diego State and Hartford, respectively.
- In 2021, the Cougars finished the season at .500 with an overall record of 6-6-3.
- CSUSM finished 10th in the CCAA standings with a 2-6-3 record.
- The Cougars were picked to finish 10th in the 2022 CCAA Women's Soccer Preseason Coaches Poll.
- Starting this season, the NCAA has eliminated overtime periods from men's and women's soccer regular-season games. All games tied after 90 minutes will end in a draw.

SEASON OPENER AGAINST THOSE OTHER COUGARS
- CSUSM is 10-2-3 all-time in season openers with its last opening-day loss occurring in 2012.
- This will be CSUSM's first time facing APU in a season opener.
- APU has won all four meetings in the all-time series dating back to 2007 and secured the last meeting with a 1-0 win in overtime in 2019.
- This will be APU's first-ever visit to San Marcos.
- APU ended the 2021 season with an overall record of 11-5-1 and finished fourth in PacWest play at 6-3-1.
- APU returns two of its top five goal scorers from 2021 in Bethany Tee and Kayla Grisham.

SATURDAY AGAINST THE RANKED SEA LIONS
- CSUSM will be PLNU's first opponent of the 2022 season on Saturday.
- PLNU came in at No. 22 in the United Soccer Coaches 2022 Preseason Poll on Aug. 2 after finishing at No. 19 last season.
- The Cougars finished 0-1-1 against ranked opponents last season with the last victory against a Top 25 foe coming against then-No. 1 UC San Diego in 2018.
- The Sea Lions own the series lead at 8-1-4 and are 4-0-2 when playing at Point Loma.
- Up until the last meeting in 2018 in San Marcos, CSUSM and PLNU had met every year since 2006.
- The last six meetings in the series have been decided by one goal or fewer.
- The Sea Lions ended the 2021 season with an overall record of 13-2-2 and were the PacWest Co-Champions with Hawai'i Hilo as both finished conference play with a 9-1 record.
- PLNU made it to the second round of the NCAA Championships after advancing on penalty kicks against Cal State East Bay but took a 1-0 loss to Western Washington to end their season.
- The Sea Lions return four of their top five leading goal scorers from 2021 in Alana Diaz, Abby Schmidt, Emma Thrapp and Bethany Arabe.

THE RENNEISEN FILE
- Head coach Bobby Renneisen enters his ninth year in charge of the women's program and 17th overall at CSUSM.
- Renneisen's 2018 team made its second consecutive CCAA Tournament appearance in 2018 while also handing No. 1 UC San Diego its lone regular-season loss.
- Between 2006-13, Renneisen was an assistant/associate head coach for both the men's and women's soccer teams.
- As the women's head coach, Renneisen is 47-44-28Â (.513) for his career with the Cougars.
