Cougars Fall 12-8 to Sonoma State, Play Elimination Game Saturday

SEASIDE, Calif. – The top-seeded Cal State San Marcos softball team dropped a 12-8 decision in the CCAA Tournament Semifinals to Sonoma State on Friday evening at the Otter Sports Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars wasted no time getting on the board as Andelin scored on an RBI single by Salgado after reaching on a one-out single.
  • The Seawolves put up a 7-spot on four hits and one CSUSM error in the bottom of the frame to take a 7-1 lead in the contest.
  • Waymire reached on an one-out double to left center field, advanced to third on Sammie Olivo's ground out and scored on a wild pitch to make it 7-2.
  • CSUSM closed the gap to 7-5 with three runs on five singles in the third inning. Salgado, Ryann Steiner and Lombardi each drove in an RBI on singles.
  • A Skylar Linnane two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth made it 9-5 SSU.
  • Pinch hitter Delaney Prater sliced an RBI single down the left line to score Lombardi, and Gutierrez knocked out a 2-RBI double that dropped behind third base and trickled to the corner to make it a 9-8 ballgame.
  •  A solo home run by Jordyn Martinez and two unearned runs off a CSUSM error gave SSU the cushion to clinch the game at 12-8.
 
QUICK HITS
  • CSUSM starting pitcher Savannah Coyle (17-4) took the loss after 0.2 innings of play, allowing seven runs (two earned) on four hits and one walk.
  • SSU's Bailee Reed (6-3) came in as relief for 4.2 innings, recording four strikeouts while relinquishing three runs (two earned) on three hits.
  • Gutierrez registered her 22nd multi-hit game of the season.



UP NEXT
The Cougars will now fight to get to Sunday's championship game by taking on the winner of the 11 a.m. elimination game between Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State Monterey Bay at 1:30 p.m.
