Cougars Win Marathon Super Regional Opening Game

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – A Paige Donnelly two-out walk-off single in the bottom of the 13th inning lifted the top-seeded Cal State San Marcos softball team (45-12) to a 3-2 victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills (39-21) in the first game of the 2022 NCAA Division II West Super Regional at CSUSM Softball Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Without getting a hit, the Toros put up a run in the top of the second inning. After reaching on a leadoff walk, Maiya Lopez was relieved by pinch runner Sydney Diaz who advanced on a sac bunt and scored on a CSUSM error.
  • Donnelly was robbed of a solo home run with a great catch from Toro right fielder Alex Davis in the bottom of the third.
  • The Cougars evened the game at 1-all in the bottom of the fourth inning. Gutierrez singled over the shortstop's outreached glove to left center and was replaced by pinch runner Klarissa Munoz who later scored on Arredondo's RBI double off the right field wall.
  • The Cougars left the bases loaded after tallying three singles in the bottom of the fifth.
  • Donnelly sent another one deep in the bottom of the 10th but was easily caught by the Toro center fielder.
  • The Toros took a 2-1 lead in the top of the 12th on Claudia Valencia's solo home run to center.
  • CSUSM evened the game once again at 2-all in the bottom of the frame. A Steiner two-out RBI single up the middle plated pinch hitter Madison Waymire who reached first on a CSUDH error.
  • In the bottom of the 13th, Andelin hit a two-out single to center before stealing second to get into scoring position. On a 2-2 pitch, Donnelly sent the ball into left field for a single as Andelin came around third to beat the throw home and score.
 
QUICK HITS
  • CSUSM starting pitcher Jayline Sloss (16-3) collected the win after going 9.2 innings, giving up one unearned run on four hits and four walks. She struck out four batters.
  • Coyle gave Sloss a bit of relief in the middle of the extra-long game, going 3.1 innings in the circle and allowing one run on three hits.
  • CSUDH's reliever Ashley Wies (19-8) took the loss after 8.2 innings, relinquishing two runs (one earned) on nine hits and one walk. She struck out two.
  • Toro starter Alyssa Olaque went 4.0 innings, giving up one run on five hits and two walks.
  • The 13-inning win was CSUSM's first victory when going past the 11-inning mark.
  • It was the second-longest game in program history for CSUSM. On March 26, 2016, the Cougars dropped a 5-7 decision in 14 innings to San Francisco State.
  • The Cougars outhit the Toros, 14-7, in the contest.
  • Gutierrez registered her team-leading 25th multi-hit game and her 22nd with a pair of hits.
  • This was Coyle's third three-hit ballgame and her 14th multi-hit game this season.
  • Andelin extended her streak of reaching base to 18 consecutive games, the most by a Cougar this season.  

 


UP NEXT
The Cougars will have two chances to secure the 2022 NCAA Division II West Super Regional title on Friday. The first game is slated to begin at 11 a.m. with the "if necessary" game following at approximately 1:30 p.m.
