Cougars Earn 15-12 Senior Day Win

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – In the final home game of 2022, the Cal State San Marcos baseball team sent its seniors out on top with a 15-12 victory over San Francisco State on Sunday afternoon at CSUSM Baseball Field.
 
Prior to the game, CSUSM honored seniors Griffin Teisher, Kevin Van Linge, Gabriel Ponce de Leon, Jacob Casson, Garrett Apker, Tommy Garcia, Tommy Fermin, Zack Berohn and Mark Stanford with CSUSM President Dr. Ellen Neufeldt, Vice President of Student Affairs Viridiana Diaz and Director of Athletics Jennifer Milo in attendance.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • CSUSM scored the games' first run in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI groundout to short by Luke Reece that scored Teisher.
  • The Cougars put up a six-run inning in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI single by Adam Chadwick, a two-run single by Diaz, a two-run triple by Teisher and a sacrifice fly to center by Aiden Richert.
  • The Gators' Jo Bynum led off the top of the fifth inning with a home run to right and cut SF State's deficit to 7-1.
  • An RBI groundout by Diaz to second in the bottom of the sixth scored Lopez and made it an 8-1 game.
  • SF State scored two runs in the top of the seventh on an RBI double to left center by Sammy Gonzales and an RBI single down the right field line by Daniel Santos to make the score 8-3.
  • The bottom of the seventh proved to be quite fruitful for the Cougars as they rallied for seven runs on an RBI single through the left side by Richert, an RBI single to right by Reece, an RBI single to right by Van Linge and back-to-back homers on a three-run shot by Stanford and a solo shot by Ponce de Leon.
  • The Gators tried to make a game of it in the top of the ninth with nine runs on five hits as Tommy Fermin and Teisher came on to pitch following Tommy Garcia's exit, but Teisher closed out the game with a strikeout and handed CSUSM a 15-12 win.
 
QUICK HITS
  • Garcia (3-4) earned the win for the Cougars as he threw a career-high 8.0 innings and matched his career best for strikeouts with four while allowing three runs on eight hits and one hit batter.
  • Gator starter Nathan Shinn (2-4) took the loss after allowing seven runs (six earned) on seven hits, two walks and a hit batter while tossing five strikeouts in 5.0 innings.
  • Van Linge notched his team-best 18th multi-hit game of the season.
  • Richert improved his hitting streak 13 games ­– tying for the second-longest by a Cougar this season.
  • Richert and Van Linge each improved their reached-base streak to 13 games.
  • This was CSUSM's first-ever series split against SF State, and it was the team's first time earning back-to-back wins against the Gators.
  • CSUSM's 15 runs were the most it has ever scored against SF State.

CSUSM will conclude its 2022 season with a four-game series at Stanislaus State beginning on Thursday at 5 p.m. in Turlock.
