No. 8 Cougars Splits at Humboldt, Focus Moves to CCAA Tournament

ARCATA, Calif. – The No. 8 Cal State San Marcos softball team (39-9, 28-8 CCAA) split its final regular-season doubleheader of 2022, taking game one 7-1 before falling 10-2 in the finale at Cal Poly Humboldt (14-39, 7-29 CCAA) on Saturday. The Cougars will now turn their focus to the CCAA Tournament where they will be the No. 1 seed beginning on Thursday, May 1 in Seaside.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Jacks took their first lead of the series when Mullins scored on a wild pitch in the fourth inning after reaching on a four-pitch walk
  • The lead was short lived for Humboldt as the Cougars turned it up in the top of the sixth. Donnelly led off the inning with solo shot over the left field wall after getting the green light on a 3-0 pitch. Morales hit an RBI single before the Cougars scored on back-to-back bases loaded walks to close out the inning with a 4-1 lead.
  • The Cougars were not done as they put up three more runs in the seventh, scoring on a Jack error before Brown dished out a 2-RBI single to right field.
  • After giving up a single to begin the seventh, CSUSM starting pitcher Jamie Ponce got the next two batters to hit into back-to-back fielder's choices before the Jacks came up with another single to put two runners on. On an 0-2 pitch, Ponce forced a fly out to right to end the game.
 
QUICK HITS
  • Ponce (3-1) earned the win after allowing just one run on four hits in 7.0 innings of work.
  • Humboldt's Ava Hand took the loss after allowing two runs on one hit in 0.2 innings in the circle.
  • Donnelly's home run in the fourth was her seventh of the season, the most on the team.
  • Donnelly also kept her streak alive of reaching base safely in 15 consecutive games.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the opening frame on Ponce's RBI single to left that plated Prater, who reached on two-out single to left field.
  • The Jacks answered in the bottom of the first on Izzy Starr's two-run home run to left field to take a 2-1 lead.
  • Humboldt added another run in the bottom of the second on Hollee Travao's RBI single up the middle that plated Anna Brondos, who drew a leadoff walk.
  • The Jacks put up six runs on five hits and three walks in the bottom of the third to make it 9-1.
  • Humboldt added another run in the bottom of the fourth on Harris' RBI single up the middle to raise its lead to 10-1.
  • The Cougars were able to push one more run across in the top of the fifth on Arredondo's RBI single to center.
  • Humboldt's starting pitcher McAdams recorded a strikeout to end the game at 10-2 in the fifth due to the mercy rule

  • McAdams (1-5) ended her season with a win, allowing two runs on five hits and five walks while striking out six batters.
  • CSUSM starter Zoe Ballen (6-3) took the loss after giving up 10 runs on nine hits and seven walks.

The No. 8 Cougars will make their first appearance in the CCAA Tournament as the No. 1 seed on May 4 and will face the winner of fourth-seeded Cal State Dominguez Hills and fifth-seeded Cal State Monterey Bay at 6:30 p.m. The 2022 CCAA Tournament will be hosted by Cal State Monterey Bay at the Otter Sports Complex in Seaside, California.
