Cougars Take Doubleheader Losses to No. 18 Chico State

CHICO, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team (9-16, 5-10 CCAA) dropped a doubleheader to No. 18 Chico State (22-5, 15-3 CCAA) by scores of 11-3 and 10-6 on Saturday at Nettleton Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Wildcats took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on an attempted double steal with runners on the corners.
  • With a runner on second and out in the bottom of the third, Willie LaJoie hit an RBI single up the middle to score Jeffrey Ray from second and increase Chico's lead to 2-0.
  • CSUSM's made it a 2-1 game in the top of the fourth. After a one-out double through the left side by Ethan Rivera and a single to left by Berohn, Stanford hit an RBI single up the middle to score Rivera.
  • With a runner on second and one out in the bottom of the fourth, the Wildcats' Elijah Jackson hit an RBI single up the middle to score Kyle Dobson and give Chico a 3-1 lead.
  • Chico went up 4-1 in the bottom of the fifth with a two-out RBI single to center by Jacob Jablonski.
  • After Grady Morgan scored on a wild pitch with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning, Ray hit a grand slam to put Chico ahead at 9-1.
  • The Wildcats went up 11-1 in the bottom of the eighth with an RBI double down the left field line by Michael Bennin, who then scored on from third on a double play.
  • CSUSM concluded the scoring in the top of the ninth as Freeman hit a two-out, two-run double to left and cut the Cougars' deficit to 11-3.
 
QUICK HITS
  • Chico starter Cody Gentry (5-1) picked up the win as he struck out two and allowed just one run on seven hits and a walk in 7.0 innings.
  • CSUSM starter Nolan Long (1-2) took the loss as he struck out three while allowing four runs on seven hits and three walks in 6.0 innings.
  • Stanford improved his hitting streak to eight games, tying for the best on the team this season. He also improved his reached-base streak to nine games ­– the second longest by a Cougar this year.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • With runners in scoring position after a single and a double, Chico's Morgan picked up an RBI on a groundout to short while Ray scored from third to put the Wildcats up 1-0 in the bottom of the first.
  • In the bottom of the second, Chico's Murphy hit a two-out, bases-loaded single back up the middle to plate two runs and gave the Wildcats a 3-0 lead.
  • The Wildcats took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the third as Jackson hit a two-out, RBI double through the left side.
  • With one out and bases loaded in the top of the fourth, Van Linge delivered with a sacrifice fly to right and scored Reece from third for the Cougars' first run.
  • Chico put together a six-run fourth to go up 10-1 on a two-run single to center, an RBI single up the middle, a two-run single through the left side and on a CSUSM throwing error.
  • In the top of the fifth, the Cougars made it a 10-5 game. With the bases loaded, Rivera brought in two runs with a single through the right side. After a Chico pitching change, Berohn hit a sac fly to center to plate Reece from third. Rivera then scored from third on a throwing error to end the scoring.
  • CSUSM tried to get a rally going in the top of the seventh. After Reece got on base with a single through the left side, Rivera hit an RBI double to left to make it 10-6. However, the Cougars left two on base with a strikeout, fielder's choice and groundout to end the game.
 
QUICK HITS
  • Chico starter Austin McFarlane (2-0) earned the win as he allowed five runs (two earned) on five hits and a walk in 4.1 innings.
  • CSUSM starter Trevor Schott (1-1) took the loss as he struck out two while allowing three runs on five hits and a walk in 2.0 innings.
  • Stanford extended his hitting streak to a team-best nine games while also improving his reached-base streak to 10.
  • This was Rivera's team-leading 12th game with multiple hits and 10th game with multiple RBIs.
