RV Cougars Open CSUEB Series With a Sweep

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The RV Cal State San Marcos softball team (21-3, 12-2 CCAA) set a new conference win record with a sweep over Cal State East Bay (14-9, 8-6 CCAA) on Friday afternoon at CSUSM Softball Field. The Cougars took game one 3-1 before Savannah Coyle hit a walk-off single in the 10th to claim a 4-3 nightcap victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Pioneers struck first in their first at-bat, taking a 1-0 lead on Madeline Ramirez's RBI double to right center.
  • CSUSM took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth on a 2-RBI double by Andelin off the right center wall who later scored on Donnelly's double up the middle.
 
QUICK HITS
  • Cougar starter Savannah Coyle (9-1) tossed a complete-game victory, allowing only one run on four hits while striking out seven and allowing no walks.
  • Pioneer starter Abby Greer took the loss after 5.0 innings in the circle, giving up three runs on eight hits and one walk.
  • Coyle has pitched four complete games this season and struck out five or more batters in seven of the nine games she has appeared in.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Lombardi got things started in the third inning with her first home run of the season.
  • Sarah Duran's RBI double to left field in the fifth inning evened the game at 1-all.
  • The Pioneers took a 2-1 lead in the eighth inning on a Kyndal Riddell double down the right line.
  • CSUEB's Madeline Ramirez hit a solo home run to put the Pioneers back on top once again at 3-2 in the top of the 10th.
  • The Cougars would not go away quietly, knotting the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the 10th on a CSUEB error before Coyle hit a walk-off RBI single to give CSUSM a 4-3 win.
 
 
QUICK HITS
  • Jayline Sloss (8-1) picked up the win after entering the game in relief in the fifth inning and went 5.1 innings, allowing two runs on three hits while striking out five.
  • CSUEB starter Anamaria Beard (7-4) tossed a complete game, allowing four runs (three earned) on nine hits and three walks.
  • Lombardi's home run was the second of her collegiate career.
  • The Cougars have recorded a program-best 12 conference wins on the season, passing the previous record of 11 CCAA wins set in 2017.
