Cougars Shut Out By Eagles, 7-0

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team (1-2) suffered a 7-0 shutout loss to Concordia University Irvine (4-0-1) at CSUSM Baseball Field on Tuesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Scoreless heading into the top of the third inning, CUI's Jackson Collins hit a two-out RBI single up the middle to score Michael Dixon from third and gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
  • CUI made it 2-0 in the top of the fourth thanks to a Tristan Hanoian RBI double down the left field line with two outs.
  • With a runner on second and no outs, Collins struck again for CUI with an RBI triple to center to go up 3-0. Richard Castro then hit a two-run blast to left with one out to give the Eagles a 5-0 lead.
  • MacDonald Jr. took over on the mound after the home run and threw three scoreless innings of relief for CSUSM.
  • The Cougars had an opportunity in the bottom of the eighth with the bases juiced, but a fly out to right ended the inning.
  • CUI rounded out the scoring in the top of the ninth as Nick Benefeito scored on a passed ball before Collins scored from third on a balk to give the Eagles a 7-0 lead.
 
QUICK HITS
  • CUI's Matthew Williams (1-0) earned the win after throwing 5.0 scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and two hit-by-pitches while posting one strikeout. Tristan Perrin earned his first save of the year after throwing 4.0 scoreless innings of relief while recording three strikeouts and allowing three hits.
  • CSUSM starter Christian Becerra (0-1) took the loss after allowing two runs on five hits, a walk and two hit-by-pitches while recording two strikeouts in 4.0 innings.
  • CSUSM was held without an extra-base hit.
  • Diaz and Teisher have recorded a hit in all three games this season.
 
UP NEXT
CSUSM and CUI will tangle once again next Tuesday (Feb. 15) as the Cougars take a trip up to Irvine to face the Eagles at 5 p.m.
