Cougars Win CCAA Series With Saturday Doubleheader Sweep Over SSU

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos softball team (16-2, 6-1 CCAA) collected its second CCAA series win with a Saturday doubleheader sweep over Sonoma State (10-9, 2-6 CCAA) by scores of 6-4 and 1-0. The Cougars won the series 3-1 after splitting yesterday's doubleheader.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After three consecutive singles to begin the second inning, Ryann Steiner drove in a run on a groundout and Sammie Olivo followed with a sacrifice fly to deep center field to give CSUSM a 2-0 lead.
  • The Seawolves got on the board in the top of the third on Jordyn Martinez's RBI single up the middle, making it 2-1 CSUSM.
  • SSU took advantage of two Cougar errors in the top of the fourth, pushing two runs across to take a 3-2 lead.
  • CSUSM started off the bottom of the frame with a walk and back-to-back singles by Gutierrez and Steiner. After Olivo was bonked in the elbow to even the game, Guiliano lined a ball out to left field for a sacrifice fly to retake the lead at 4-3. Donnelly closed out the scoring in the inning with a 2-RBI double to left center, giving CSUSM a 6-3 lead.
  • In the fifth inning, SSU pushed another run across on a wild pitch to make it 6-4.
  • Coyle retired the side in the seventh with a pop up, fly out and strikeout.
 
QUICK HITS
  • Coyle (6-1) collected the win after tossing a complete game, striking out six batters and allowing four runs (two earned) on eight hits.
  • SSU starter Nichole Sarra took the loss after 3.1 innings in the circle, giving up six runs on six hits and two walks.
  • Lombardi extended her hit streak to eight games after racking up two hits in the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • It was a true pitching duel until the final inning as four pinch hitters gave CSUSM the victory. Morgan Salgado was granted first after being hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the seventh. Savannah Coyle beat out a bunt for a single and Steiner followed with a single up the middle to load up the bases. On the second pitch she faced, Waymire sent the ball to left field for Salgado to tag up and score.  
 
QUICK HITS
  • Sloss (6-0) picked up her second win of the series after throwing a complete-game shutout, allowing just one hit and four walks while striking out two.
  • SSU starter Camille Rodriques picked up the loss after going 6.1 innings, relinquishing one run on five hits and three walks while striking out one.  
  • Lombardi saw her hitting streak come to an end at eight games. 
  • Waymire has reached base safely in six consecutive games. 
  • After two conference series, the Cougars sit on top of the CCAA standings at 7-1. Cal State East Bay and Chico State are tied for second with a 6-2 CCAA record.
