Cougars Split Friday's Twinbill with Sonoma State

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos softball team (14-2, 5-1 CCAA) extended its win streak to 13 games after a 3-1 win against Sonoma State (10-7, 2-4 CCAA) in the series opener on Friday afternoon before seeing it snapped with a 5-2 loss in the doubleheader nightcap.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • SSU got on the board in the top of the fourth on a double steal attempt when runners were on first and third. CSUSM got the runner going to second, but the Seawolves snuck one in across the plate to take 1-0 lead.
  • Pinch-hitter Ryann Steiner crushed a 3-run home run to left center to put CSUSM up 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth.
  • Savannah Coyle picked up her fourth save of the season after retiring the side in the seventh with two strikeouts and a groundout to give CSUSM the 3-1 win. 
 
QUICK HITS
  • CSUSM starter Jayline Sloss (4-0) collected the win after tossing 6.0 innings, striking out four and allowing just one run on three hits.
  • SSU starter Camille Rodriguez picked up the loss after 5.0 innings of work, allowing three runs on five hits and one walk. She struck out four batters.
  • Steiner's home run was her second game-winner of the season. Her first came at Stanislaus State in game two on Feb. 18 when she hit a two-run homer in the seventh to lift CSUSM to a 7-5 victory.  
  • The Cougars 13-game win streak is a program-best in the NCAA Division II era.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • SSU took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on Giana Hays' RBI double followed by Lauren Mirtoni's RBI groundout.
  • CSUSM made it 2-1 in the bottom of the frame. Nikki Andelin led off with a single through the left side and scored on Paige Donnelly's RBI double to the left center wall.
  • The Seawolves extended their lead to 3-1 in the top of the second on Skyler Linnane's solo homer to center field.
  • In the third inning, Mirtini laid down an infield RBI single to raise SSU's lead to 4-1.
  • Linnane's second home run, a blast down the left field wall, in the top of the fourth made it 5-1.
  • After lacing a single through the left side, Ponce moved to third on Gutierrez's bunt single and scored on a fielder's choice by Gianna Lombardi to make it 5-2 in the bottom of the fourth.
  • Neither team was able to score any more runs in the final three innings.
 
QUICK HITS
  • SSU starter Jesse DuPuis (5-0) earned the win after going 4.0 innings, allowing two runs on six hits and striking out two batters.
  • CSUSM starter Zoe Ballen (3-1) picked up the loss after 3.0 innings in the circle and relinquishing five runs (four earned) on five hits and one walk.
  • Jamie Ponce came in and tossed four shutout innings, giving up just one hit while striking out two.
  • Lombardi extended her hitting streak to seven games after securing a hit in both games on Friday.

UP NEXT
The Cougars will close out their four-game series with Sonoma State on Saturday, Feb. 26 with a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m.
