No. 14/14 CSUSM to Close Out Home Schedule Against Stanislaus, No. 11/10 Chico

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The No. 14/14 Cal State San Marcos men’s basketball team (14-3, 10-3 CCAA) will play its final home games of the regular season this week by hosting Stanislaus State (7-12, 4-10 CCAA) on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. before ending with No. 11/10 Chico State (15-3, 11-3 CCAA) on Saturday at 3 p.m.

Prior to Saturday’s game against Chico, CSUSM will honor Sean Dunn, Alex Gil-Fernandez, Blake Seits and Lyle Sutton, who will be playing their final regular-season home game at The Sports Center.

The CSUSM Student-Athlete Advisory Committee is holding its annual food drive from Feb. 10-17. All items collected will benefit the Cougar Pantry and the San Diego Food Bank. All fans in attendance who bring three food items will receive free admission to Thursday's game against Stanislaus State.

LAST TIME OUT

  • Prior to three canceled games, CSUSM last played on Feb. 3 against Cal State East Bay as the Pioneers came away with a 79-77 win in Hayward.
  • Blake Seits scored a career-high 32 points for the Cougars.

COUGARS BY THE NUMBERS

  • In the first official NCAA West Region rankings on Wednesday, CSUSM came in at No. 2 while Cal State San Bernardino took the top spot in this week’s poll. The top eight teams in the region selected by the NCAA after each conference’s tournament will advance to the West Regional of the NCAA Tournament beginning on March 11.
  • CSUSM came in at No. 14 in both the NABC Top 25 Coaches Poll and the D2SIDA Top 25 National Media Poll on Tuesday.
  • For the second consecutive week, the Cougars were voted third in the D2SIDA West Region Poll behind Cal State San Bernardino and Chico State.
  • Despite not playing last week, CSUSM clinched a berth in the CCAA Tournament set to take place at Cal Poly Humboldt on March 3-5 in Arcata. This will be the Cougars' first appearance in the postseason since the 2017-18 season, and it will be their second time competing in the CCAA Tournament since moving to NCAA Division II in 2015-16.
  • Based on conference winning percentage, CSUSM is fourth in the CCAA standings at .769. Cal State San Bernardino leads the way at .857 while Chico State and Cal State Monterey Bay are tied for second at .786.
  • CSUSM continues to sport the best 3-point field-goal defense in the nation at 28.2%.
  • The Cougars have committed the third-fewest turnovers in Division II this season at 180.
  • CSUSM has a turnover margin of 6.7 ­– the fifth best in the nation.
  • Shooting 79.6% from the charity stripe, CSUSM has the fifth-best free-throw percentage in Division II.
  • The Cougars are tallying 9.7 steals per game – the 10th-best average in the nation.
  • Forcing 17.29 turnovers per game, CSUSM ranks 10th in Division II.
  • The Cougars have committed the 10th-fewest fouls in the nation this year with 286.
  • CSUSM’s scoring defense of 64.4 points per game ranks 19th nationally.
  • Outscoring teams by 12.7 points per game, the Cougars have the 20th-best scoring margin in the country.
  • Committing just 10.6 turnovers per game, CSUSM ranks 22nd nationally.
  • The Cougars have the best assist-turnover ratio in the CCAA at 1.21.
  • Jayce McCain’s free-throw percentage of 94.1% ranks second in the nation.

FIRST MEETING AGAINST STANISLAUS

  • Thursday will be the first meeting between CSUSM and Stanislaus this season after the first scheduled game on Jan. 15 was declared a no contest due to COVID-19 health and safety measures.
  • The Warriors lost both games last weekend by two points each to San Francisco State (82-80) and Cal State Monterey Bay (56-54).
  • Stanislaus currently ranks ninth in the CCAA standings with a .286 winning percentage.
  • The Warriors’ lone player averaging double figures this season is Tony Singleton at 13.7 points per game.
  • Stanislaus is the worst scoring team in the CCAA at 60.8 points per game, but it has the best scoring defense in the league at 63.1 points allowed per game.
  • The Warriors have the worst team field-goal percentage (40.2%) and team free-throw percentage (62.3%) in the conference.
  • CSUSM is 6-3 in the all-time series against Stanislaus and is 3-1 when playing the Warriors at home.
  • This will be the Cougars’ second consecutive meeting against the Warriors in San Marcos as CSUSM won the last meeting 84-76 on Jan. 30, 2020, in The Sports Center.

REMATCH AGAINST CHICO

  • CSUSM and Chico last met on Jan. 13 in Chico and saw the Cougars earn an 87-85 win in overtime against the then-No.4/5 Wildcats. Chico was the highest-ranked team CSUSM had ever defeated as an NCAA member.
  • Chico played just one game last weekend as its Thursday game against Cal State Monterey Bay was declared a no contest due to COVID-19 health and safety measures. The Wildcats then won the second scheduled game of the weekend against San Francisco State by a score of 82-79 on Saturday.
  • The Wildcats are currently tied with Cal State Monterey Bay for second in the CCAA standings with a .833 conference winning percentage.
  • Chico currently has four players averaging double figures with Malik Duffy leading the way at 14.8 points per game while also coming down with 7.7 boards per game.
  • Kelvin Wright Jr. is the third-best rebounder in the league at 8.1 rebounds per game.
  • The Wildcats have the fourth-best 3-point field-goal defense in the country at 28.5% while also having the 12th-best field-goal percentage defense at 39.9%.
  • Chico has the 17th-best scoring defense in the nation at 64.3 points allowed per game.
  • The Wildcats have the 10th-lowest steals per game average in the CCAA at 5.7.
  • CSUSM is 4-6 in the all-time series against Chico and is 2-2 against the Wildcats at home.
  • The Cougars have won the last two meetings against the Wildcats at The Sports Center with the last occurring on Jan. 5, 2019.

COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • After sitting out the 2020-21 season, CSUSM returns five student-athletes from the 2019-20 season in Jayce McCain, Blake Seits, Alex Gil-Fernandez, Chase Bowsher and Sean Dunn.
  • Nine Cougars will be hitting the court in Cougar blue for the first time, including Division-I transfers Lyle Sutton (Idaho State), Tyrone Nesby IV (Wagner), Joel Mensah (James Madison and San Diego State) and Greg Milton III (Wyoming).
  • Joining the team in 2020-21, redshirt freshmen Ethan Barnella, Jack Schultz and Garrett Hall will finally get the opportunity to suit up for CSUSM this season while true freshmen Max Lonneker and Donovan Watkins joined the roster this season.
  • CSUSM was picked to finished seventh in the 2021-22 CCAA Preseason Coaches Poll.

THE FOSTER FILE

  • Head coach B.J. Foster enters his sixth season in charge of the CSUSM Men's Basketball program after taking over the head position in 2016.
  • Under his leadership, the Cougars advanced to the CCAA Tournament for the first time in 2017-18 after finishing the season with a 15-7 conference record and a 20-9 overall record.
  • Prior to becoming head coach of the Cougars, Foster was an assistant coach with the team from 2013 to 2016.
  • Foster has tallied a career record of 73-57 (.562).
