Cougars Head Indoors for GVSU Big Meet

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos women’s track & field team will compete in its first indoor meet of the 2022 season at the Grand Valley State University Big Meet on Friday and Saturday in Allendale, Michigan.

LAST MEET

  • The Cougars last competed on Jan. 29 at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps’ OIDFE Challenge.
  • CSUSM saw a couple of school records fall as Ana Mercado broke the record for the one-mile run with a time of 5:08.55 while Bianca Encio had a record weight throw mark of 12.44 meters.
  • Teigen O’Donnell won the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.25 while Renee Laurenzana had a winning time of 10:35.21 in the 3,000-meter run.
  • Mia Salinas took the 400-meter dash with a winning time of 1:02.08.
  • Devin Yarbrough was victorious in the long jump with a distance of 5.30 meters while teammate Amaya Mahmoud won the triple jump with a mark of 11.01 meters.

GVSU BIG MEET

  • This weekend’s GVSU Big Meet will consist of two separate meets on Friday and Saturday.
  • This will be the Cougars’ first indoor meet since last competing in the GVSU Big Meet on Feb. 14-15, 2020.
  • Over 1,800 entries from 159 teams are entered to compete on Friday alone.
  • On Friday, CSUSM is scheduled to have entries in the 5,000-meter run, the 60-meter hurdles, the 60-meter dash, the 600-meter run, the one-mile run, the 800-meter run, the long jump, the triple jump.
  • A heat sheet for Saturday’s meet will be released at a later time.
  • At the 2020 GVSU Big Meet, Ana Mercado broke the school record in the 600-meter run with a time of 1:37.30 while Clarissa Garcia posted an NCAA provision time of 2:14.06 in the 800-meter run.

COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • The women's track & field team will field a roster of 35 for the 2022 season.
  • The women's team will field 20 returners from the 2020 roster.
  • The women's squad will compete in four indoor meets and 15 outdoor meets in 2022 with the potential of competing at the NCAA Division II Indoor and Outdoor Championships.
  • Of the women's team's 19 total meets, the Cougars have competed in 15 of them once before.
  • Clarissa Garcia was named an All-Academic Athlete for the 2020 season by the USTFCCCA while the women's squad was named an All-Academic Team.

THE OLSON FILE

  • Head coach Torrey Olson begins his fourth season at the helm of the men's and women's track & field programs after taking over in the summer of 2018.
  • In 2019, Olson's men's and women's squads tallied three CCAA Championships for outdoor competition while the men's team earned five All-West Region selections.
  • Olson came to CSUSM after spending three seasons as the Director of Track & Field and Cross Country at the Academy of Art University where his teams earned 50-plus All-American honors.
  • Olson served as the head cross country coach the previous three years at Academy of Art.
  • In addition to the Academy of Art, Olson has also worked with the University of San Francisco and Pomona-Pitzer College.
  • A graduate of Pomona College in 2009, Olson also holds an MFA from St. Mary's College (2012).
