Cougars Claim Third Place at CCAA Championships

COURSE REPORT:  The Cal State San Marcos men's cross country team placed third for the second consecutive year at the CCAA Championships on the course of Palo Corona Trail in Carmel on Saturday morning. The Cougars compiled a score of 105, 23 less than fourth-place Stanislaus State. 
 
FINISH LINE
  • Competing in his first conference championships, Ruben Piña collected his first All-CCAA honor with a time of 25:17.1 to take 11th place in the CCAA Championships in a field of 76 runners. 
  • Trevor Boaz narrowly missed out on all-conference honors with a 16th-place finish with a time of 25:30.4, improving on his 50th-place 2021 CCAA Championship finish.
  • Nick Melanese was CSUSM's third top-20 finisher at 18th after crossing the line at 25:41.4.
  • Also making their conference championship debuts, Jimmy Byland and Matt Frey took 31st (26:16.2) and 37th (26:29.1), respectively.
  • Chico State claimed its 20th consecutive CCAA Men's Cross Country Championship with 20 points as six Wildcats finished in the top nine. Cal Poly Pomona took runner-up honors with a score of 55.
  • Rory Abberton of Chico State was the CCAA individual medalist with a time of 24:45.2.

"The men ran a solid team race. With Sankalp out this weekend, we knew some guys would need to step up, and today not only did our top 3 produce solid efforts, but Jimmy Byland had a career day to step up for the team as a true freshman."

WHAT'S NEXT
The Cougars will be off for two weeks preparing for the NCAA Division II West Regional Championships in Billings, Montana on Nov. 19. The regionals will take place at Amend Park, four miles away from the Montana State Billings campus.
