CSUSM Heads to PLNU, LA to Begin Four-Game Road Trip

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men's basketball team (0-3) will travel to RV/No. 20 Point Loma (3-2) on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Golden Gymnasium before opening CCAA play on the road at Cal State LA (2-3) on Saturday at 3 p.m. in University Gym.
 
LAST WEEK
  • The Cougars fell 69-60 to Central Washington in their home opener at The Sports Center this past Thursday.
  • Greg Milton III led CSUSM in scoring for the third consecutive game with 16 points.

COUGARS BY THE NUMBER
  • CSUSM is committing the fewest fouls per game in the CCAA at 16.0.
  • The Cougars are committing the third-fewest turnovers per game in the conference at 11.7.
  • Shooting 35.2% from beyond the arc, CSUSM has the third-best 3-point field-goal percentage in the CCAA.
  • At 45.4%, the Cougars have the fourth-best field-goal percentage in the league.

CROSS COUNTY FOES

  • Despite being a short drive from one another, CSUSM will meet PLNU for just the fourth time ever and the second time as an NCAA member on Tuesday.
  • This will be the Cougars first time facing the Sea Lions in Golden Gymnasium since their initial visit on Jan. 23, 2013.
  • CSUSM blew out PLNU at The Sports Center last season with a 90-52 victory over the then-No.24/9 Sea Lions.
  • The Cougars are 1-2 in the all-time series against the Sea Lions.
  • Beginning the season at 3-0 with wins over Stanislaus State (73-62), Cal State East Bay (68-62) and Northwest Nazarene (69-54), PLNU took two losses this past weekend by falling 89-85 in overtime against No. 8 Minnesota Duluth and 80-68 at Northern State this past weekend in South Dakota.
  • Back-to-back PacWest Player of the Year Kaden Anderson leads the Sea Lions with 23.4 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. His 117 total points and 35 made free throws both rank second nationally.
  • The Sea Lions have the ninth-best free-throw percentage in the nation at 83.7, but PLNU ranks 11th in the PacWest with a 41.4 field-goal percentage.
  • Point Loma was picked to finish second in the PacWest, just one point behind Azusa Pacific in the conference's Preseason Coaches Poll.

CCAA OPENER IN LA

  • The Golden Eagles are in the midst of a seven-game homestand to begin the season and will wrap it up against the Cougars on Saturday.
  • Prior to Saturday, LA will host Fresno Pacific in its final non-conference game on Tuesday night
  • The Golden Eagles went 2-1 this past week with a 69-59 victory over Azusa Pacific, an 87-82 loss to Northwest Nazarene and a 57-51 win over Central Washington.
  • CSUSM has won the past three meetings against LA and four of the last five.
  • The Cougars own a 6-5 lead in the all-time series but are 2-3 when playing in Los Angeles.
  • Last season, CSUSM won the season series against LA for the first time with a 76-65 win in San Marcos before a 70-61 win in Los Angeles.
  • Dominic Escobar and Shane Bell lead the Golden Eagles in scoring at 14.3 and 14.2 points per game, respectively.

A NEW CAMPAIGN
  • The Cougars were voted to finish second in the 2022-23 CCAA Preseason Coaches Poll.
  • Nine Cougars return from the 2021-22 team, including All-CCAA first-teamer Jayce McCain and second-teamer Greg Milton III.
  • CSUSM is joined this year by five transfers, including sophomore Quinn Denker (West Valley College), redshirt junior Edwyn Collins (Riverside City College), graduate Zack Perlstein (Cal State East Bay), redshirt junior Bing Huang (Johnson County CC) and redshirt junior Chris Howard (Palomar College).
  • Rounding out the Cougars' roster of 15 is lone freshman Jermaine Rogers II (Ruben S. Ayala HS).

THE FOSTER FILE

  • Head coach B.J. Foster enters his sixth season in charge of the CSUSM Men's Basketball program after taking over the head position in 2016.
  • Under his leadership, the Cougars earned their first CCAA Tournament Championship in 2022 and made their first NCAA West Regional appearance.
  • Prior to becoming head coach of the Cougars, Foster was an assistant coach with the team from 2013 to 2016.
