Hot Pioneers Take Three From CSUSM

HAYWARD, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos volleyball team (5-12, 4-6 CCAA) lost a three-set match to Cal State East Bay (13-4, 6-3 CCAA) on Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Gymnasium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The opening set showed 14 ties and five lead changes with the Pioneers pulling away with six unanswered points to take a 22-17 lead before closing out the set at 25-19.
  • CSUEB led wire-to-wire in the second set with CSUSM closing the gap at 15-14 on a block by Ridgeway and Sofia Hedqvist. CSUEB answered with a 4-0 run before registering a 25-21 second-set victory.
  • CSUSM took a 3-0 lead in the third set capped by a Madison Turner ace before the Pioneers responded by tying it up at 3-all. Both teams tied the set three more times before the Pioneers took the lead for good that resulted in a 25-18 set win and a sweep in both match and season series.

  • The Cougars are in eighth place in the CCAA standings, just one game behind San Francisco State and Sonoma State who are tied for sixth place.
  • CSUSM's schedule ranks the 35th toughest among NCAA Division II teams this season.
  • The Cougars outblocked CSUEB 7-6 with Gwynnie Wentzel recording three.
