HOW IT HAPPENED
- Up 9-5 in the first set, the Otters went on a 7-1 run to go up by 10 on a Kaylie Honberger kill. Down 22-14, CSUSM rattled off five straight points to bring the deficit down to 22-19 on a Mackenzie Jennings kill, but three consecutive attack errors by the Cougars allowed the Otters to take the set at 25-19.
- The second set was a tight one as CSUSM and CSUMB stayed within four points of each other for entirety of the frame. Knotted at 22, a kill by Hedqvist and an Otter attacking error gave the Cougars set point at 24-22. After CSUMB briefly staved off losing the set with a kill, an Otter attack error gave CSUSM the set and tied the match at 1-1.
- The Cougars and Otters did more of the same in the third set as neither side had more than a four-point lead. Tied at 23 after a Hedqvist kill, back-to-back CSUMB kills clinched the set and gave the Otters a 2-1 lead for the match.
- As previously happened in the last two sets, CSUSM and CSUMB never had more than a four-point gap between each other in the fourth set. Tied at 22, two kills by Barr and a block by Barr and Ridgeway sealed the deal and tied the match at 2-2. The Cougars hit a match-high .256 for the set with 16 kills.
- Down 10-7 in the fifth set, CSUSM evened the frame with two Hedqvist kills and a block by Kelli Miechowicz. Tied 12-12, a Barr kill, a block by Barr and Miechowicz and an Otter attacking error handed CSUSM the set and match.
