COURSE REPORT: Competing against six teams ranked in the latest USTFCCCA Top 30 National Poll, the Cal State San Marcos men's cross country team recorded a 10th-place finish with 300 points at the Lewis Crossover on Saturday morning in Romeoville, Illinois. No. 9 Colorado Christian won the team title with 47 points and No. 25 Illinois-Springfield captured runner-up honors with 80 points.
FINISH LINE
- Ruben Piña was CSUSM's top runner for the second consecutive race, finishing in 27th place with a time of 24:46.3.
- Sankalp Shastri was the next Cougar across the line in a time of 25:13.4 for 65th while Trevor Boaz followed close behind for 71st place at 25:13.4.
- Matt Frey ran the race in a time of 25:34.2 for 84th place.
- Competing in his first race of 2022, Nick Melanese finished in 93rd place (25:41.9) with Jimmy Byland (98th, 25:47.2) and Ased Adus (121st, 26:12.6).
THOUGHTS FROM COACH OLSON
"We had some key pieces of the puzzle click in this weekend on both genders, with a few more to go still to be where we need to be. On the women's side, Emma and Carly particularly executed well. On the men's side, it was great to see Nick get back to competition, who helped lead freshmen Matt and Sankalp to key breakthrough performances. We still have some work to put it all together but it is starting to take shape."
